Last night my rev counter dial didn't light up. Everything else was fine, even the needle lit up, just the back light on the dial itself was dark. The illumination is more flourscent than bulb so I suspected it was a cold cathode setup like the S class.
So this morning I rang the dealer and asked 'is this a normal bulb or is it a more complex item?"
You need a new cluster at £850 required came the reply.
She's under warranty so I don't care and she's booked in on Saturday morning for a new cluster to be installed, but all I can say is that the reconditioners like speedofixer and BBA-reman are going to make a fortune if MB and friends insist on this ludicrously expensive technology where a 20p bulb would do perfectly well..
