Any thoughts please??
So went to pick up a e250 sport 7g w212 11plate 84000 miles today, test drove last week did all the usual checks, test drove again this morning just to be sure, payed & literally drove across the road to the pub where my wife was parked, put it in R to park selection shown on dash and nothing put it back to D & nothing turned engine off tryed to start again & nothing electrics all working fine, guys from garage came over to see what's wrong and checked it said key barrel has failed, after a lot of wiggling of the key in barrel it started but no gears still, any thoughts on this please anyone??

It probably needs to go on Star, the Mercedes diagnostic programme, to find out what is wrong, otherwise we are just guessing. Is there a reputable Mercedes Independent specialist near you ? I know this is not what you want to hear, can you not ask for your money back, as you literally just bought it, and it is clearly not as described ? Was it a private sale ?

Oh, and Welcome to the forum, by the way,

Oh, and Welcome to the forum, by the way,
Yes the guys were really good, he was both embarrassed about it & glad it happened right out side & not at the m way serbices on way home ect he did offer me full refund right away or he will get it repaired today if possible & have it delivered to my home on sat if repair is possible in the two days, he said have a think about what you want to do as he has to repair it anyway whether I still take it or not, so I'm not sure what to do now it has everything I wanted at a decent price the guy seems a good and genuine guy with a good reputation from previous customers ect, should I take it as a sign & walk away or is it just bad luck & let him make it right??
Help please

Hello and welcome to our forum :) shame you had that happen to you, but at least the garage owner offered you a refund or repair, so it shows he a decent operator. Whatever you decide to do good luck with this car or another Merc?

Any component can fail at anytime, unless there are other warning signs I would treat this failure as unexpected and coincidental, I would insist that the repairs were carried out, if you opt for the repair option, by a good Independent Mercedes specialist who has Star diagnostics and not any other that the seller uses and promotes, for any recommendations you should post your location and someone will pipe in and recommend accordingly, for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment Star and a proficient user is mandatory for MB vehicles!

Thank you for your insite Tony it's appreciated, my location is Basingstoke, hampshire, I don't have the vehicle as it happened literally outside the show room pretty much, the dealer is taking care of the repairs whether I decide to still take it or have a refund, I'm waiting for him to let me know what the problem is today hopefully.

You're welcome.
Nearest Indy I know of are @Cole@MBS MBS at Southampton who are not too far away and are also forum sponsors https://www.mbssouthampton.co.uk/ who I'm sure would be only too happy to give the car the once over as a health-check and confirmation that there are no known pending or lurking issues with the car, as an approved Indy they also have access to the electronic service records database for historical review if you have any further concerns?

Thank you so much that is great info for future, I have just heard back from the dealer, so it seems its not the key barrel after all its the gear selection switch on the steering collomn that's failed so it's being fixed but won't be done till Wednesday next week, if I decide to take it still I will give the Southampton guys a call to arrange a health check

Not an uncommon thing to fail on a car. The seller seems most reasonable.

Things can fail on a car at any time.

If it ticks the boxes stick with it.

I had a few issues with my w251(had been searching for ages the right model) soon after purchase. The seller was fantastic in resolving issues (In Paignton, me and the car in Germany), to the extent he posted out parts and offered to pay the labour (it was a DIY for me).

A bad seller would have told (you/me) to take a hike.

Thanks, that's the thing I have been searching for the right one & it does tick all my boxes,
My wife recons it's a sign and I should walk away but I'm of the opinion that it is a random fault & the seller has been really good so if he gets it sorted I will stick.

I think you doing the right thing, it was not a major issue and it is being fixed and as you happy with outcome then many happy years motoring :)

I think once its deliverd I will get it fully health checked by mbssouthampton just to make sure it's a random that way I'm still inside the warranty period & at least I'll know what's what from a trusted member Indy. So hopefully happy days just have to wait and see.

The steering column modules on these do fail. It’s not a common fault, but I’ve probably done half a dozen. Just one of those things, no biggie.
It could also be the selector module on the gearbox. Less common, and more expensive. Still, once it’s repaired if you like the car it wouldn’t put me off.

Just to update this thread, the vehicle was due to be delivered last Sat, got a call on the Friday it turns out the problem is the gearbox selector 4-8 week wait for the parts, so dealer has given me a full refund, & I'm now looking for a car again good job I never sold my C-Class, I test drove a e350 estate w212 last sat & loved it so now looking for a nice tidy one under 100,000 miles with the two pop up seats in the back if possible, anyone on here know of any for sale in the southeast, but I will travel further for the right one.
