E Class
Hi everyone, new here and new to M.B. so bear with me.
I like diesels, always have. There is a very nice spec 2019 E Class E200 AMG Premium that is for sale that I was planning on viewing tomorrow. Only problem is its the E200 petrol rather than the diesel. I initially wanted a diesel but the more I think about it the more I think the petrol may make more sense.
Im not a high mile driver maybe circa 10k a year.
So is there any reason to not go for the petrol, you get a better spec / year for your money. I was thinking does it affect residual values, I will probably have the car for 3 - 4 years?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

The way the world has turned buying a diesel is about the worst thing you can legally do now :(
Residuals of <Euro6 diesels is falling off dramatically due to low emission zones, and Euro 6 Diesels had a raft of emissions equipment bolted on which means regular long journeys so the DPF can burn off and the ad blue doesn't crystallise and cause ££££ bills (along with NOX sensors failing...)

A E200 in W213 chassis with the 9G box sounds like a very smart choice right now :)

I'd normally take the exact opposite view of a salesperson... ;)
However please have a search on DPF, Ad-Blue, NOX and Emissions Software updates on this forum and make your own mind up... I would only have a modern diesel with full warranty and someone else picking up the bills now

The problem we all face at the moment when buying a petrol E class W/S is the that there is little choice of engine. The E200 is possibly under powered (but do try one) and the E43/E53/E63 are another dimension in purchase and maintenance costs. MB obviously dropped the marketing ball not offering something in between but the move away from DERV has been sudden and caught a lot of manufacturers out

or buy a nice condition pre 2010 211 and save a fortune.

Am I being silly suggesting such to some one wanting a far more modern motor?

Not a silly suggestion at all.
But I have always fancied a really nice car but never been able to afford one. However at the moment I find myself in the rare position of being able to afford one so thought it would be nice to treat me and the missus.

It looks at the moment from the advice offered that the petrol makes sense.

If you were looking at a diesel the salesmen would say the opposite

Used to have a C63...
I'd also suggest buying a petrol version may be quite shrewd at present.

Whilst diesel is in decline, rightly or wrongly, and people don't have enough confidence in leccy cars (or infrastructure), you may find you can buy sensibly and suffer reduced depreciation.

Hi all and thanks for the welcomes.

Just to add a little more detail, took a 220D and the petrol 200 for a test drive today.

Was very surprised with the petrol and personally thought it felt faster with plenty of poke and I preferred it. After a spot of hard haggling I had pretty much settled on the petrol but was coming home to talk to the missus first. Just before I got home the dealer called to say it was sold!

They did warn me whilst I was there that the second hand market is very keen at the moment but I thought it was just sales patter, you live and learn.

Liked the diesel but the car was not as well spec'd or as tidy so back to the drawing board.

Anyone selling a 2018-ish E class estate AMG Premium in grey let me know:)
