Im a new member and hopefully can get get to know some of you guys,

Ive just bought an 05 E270 cdi Avantgarde and would like to know if ive made a good choice.

Does anyone know of any faults that i need to keep an eye open for or if there are any known faults.

Im not so worried for the 1st 12 months as i bought it from Mercedes direct and it comes with a full 12 months warranty. ..... bt after then.

Can anyone also advise of the fuel economy as this is one of the otherreasons i bought it.

Ive been after a 270 cdi for ages and have saved long and hard to get it so i hope ive made a good choice.

Looking forward to any replies.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome

I think you have made a good choice, I would have liked one myself. I have a C 270 CDi which fits in our garage, I would think apart from the obvious difference in size the cars are comparable re fuel economy, they are OK if you use the cruse control and also eccelerate sensibly. I run my car in the W position, this tends to make the car run smoother and keeps the revs down.
My wife drives the car mainly, we get 33mpg running around, 45-50 on a good run, overall about 38mpg. I have managed more but who wants to drive around like driving Miss Daisy!

Re your MB warranty, I had one for the first year and then took up Service Plus, this is more of a comprehensive warranty in my view which gives you piece of mind especially as it covers wear and tear and servicing, cost with VAT £73 a Month, I would think cost will vary from car to car

Good luck, happy motoring

Regards

Bryan

Hi Bryan and thanks for your reply,

I pick the car up Monday and will keep you updated, im well chuffed at the moment as ive wanted one of these since 2002 but wasn't able to afford one until now, i bought it from Mercedes for piece of mind, i know i paid slightly over the odds for it but thats the dealers for you.

Hi,
welcome on board. I've had my E270 for 2 1/2 years now and am generally very happy with it. In terms of problems I haven't had any. It isn't the smoothest or quietest diesel around town but once up to speed she's just fine. Economy wise, the best I've had was 48. Steady motorway cruising average around 40-44 and round town in rush hour commuting - 26-30 - not too bad for a car of this size with this amount of grunt, plus I have 245 tyres on which sap the economy a bit.

Hi jberks and thanks for your reply.

I have purchased this car basically as i have a new job and have to travel a bit so thought id go back to diesel, plus ive always wanted a MB and i love these E-Class`s so i saved long and hard to get the one i wanted.
I had a vectra before which was doing about 34-40 round town and 50+ on the motorway....... i know i wont get this out of this big car but my journey now to and from work is all main road driving @ national speed limit so we will see.

Do you think they may benefit from a chip???

Allegedly they do. Certainly you'll see a leap in performance up to 320cdi levels. On the down side, you'll probably see a drop in fuel economy as autos tend not to be able to take advantage of the benefits there and increased wear on the injectors, plus your insurance will go up.

I've been tempted but as I want to keep costs down I haven't done it. Plus the 270 is on the fun side of gutsy anyway. I have occasionally wished I had a bit more power, on long overtaking stints for example, but a quick 30-50 squirt past a granny and she's as quick as you'd want anyway.
