Timing chains and sprockets wear for a past time, brake pipes rust like you wouldn’t believe, rear subframes rust and pull apart, steering locks fail without warning! That’s a start!

Pretty much anything with that engine wears the gears and chain, SLKs and `e class rust the subframes and brake pipes on the whole range, these are just a couple of faults, there are many more across the group !

Keeps you in the lifestyle you're accustomed to though sir....;)

But safe to say most cars, Inc Mercedes will need some TLC and maintenance.
The MOT history is a good place to get a feel for a car being maintained or run on a budget as will servicing on time and options (such as plugs and gearbox oils, even the occasional wheel alignment / tracking) will indicate that there maybe jobs stored up or potentially not.....

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Well FINALLY found a Petrol version of the EClass. Full service history etc and a good price. Not sure if they have improved the steering or if this one has thinner tyres, but it is so much easier to steer. Thanks for all your help and input.

The thinness of tyres won’t have an effect on ease of steering… tyre pressure might do though!!
