Have you checked whether there is power to the module?

A glow plug fault of any discription wont cause a poor starting (unless you are at -10'c air temperature) issue or limp mode situation. I would say you need to carry out a fault code check and post the results here.

a few common things

VGT actuator on the turbo (should wobble as you start and blip the throttle - linkage should be free to move - u can get gunge to clean out the gunk)
Boost pressure sensor - wrongly called exhaust back pressure sensor (tells above how to behave - £40 - live data should give funny data if dead)
EGR blocked / broken (stupid money - makes it run well in the cold and makes the heater effective)
Swirl flap motor seized (often shares the same fuse with the VGT actuator - this device is a waste of space and can be nobbled for 10p)
Boost hose pipe ruptured (should be able to hear the boost leak)
