Hi there, im new to the forum so would just like to say hello to everyone !!. Obviosly ive got a problem with my car and would like some advice please if possible please.

I have a 1997 mercedes C250 diesel auto estate, which is a lovely car but ive noticed a slight cluncking noise from the front end when i go over small bumps. It also makes the noise when i turn the steering left to right really quickly whilst travelling. Also when i went to start the car the other day, i noticed that the ABS & BAS light on the dash board were permanently illuminated and have been ever since. And my last fault is that when travelling over 60 mph there is a judder on the steering wheel which gets really bad when approaching speeds of 70 to 90 mph. The judder is constant at speed, and goes away when the car is travelling around 60 mph or under. Hope somone can help out please.

Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum. Hope you find it helpful. There are many here who can help, but I will make a few suggestions.....

The suspension noise could be the front anti roll bar drop-links which is a straight forward and cheap job. It could also be a front suspension arm ball joint which will be a bit more expensive.

The judder at speed is most likely to be wheel balance - get it checked by NTS, ATS or somebody near you that you can trust.

The warning lights could be a number of things, but one of the ABS wheel sensors might have gone down. Best get it checked out by a good MB indy who has Star or equivalent.

Hope this helps, but if you need more help and guidance to do these jobs, a search on this forum will give you all the info you need.

Best regards,

Ernie

As Ernie above, I think that he has summed it all up nicely

Problem is highly likely the NS front wishbone bush seized.

The front bush (of the two) tends to seize and makes the rear bush wear out faster and clunk.

If you press down on the front of the car the NS will probably be stiffer than the OS due to the partially seized joint.

They have to be cut off to get the wishbone off the car and to fit either replacement wishbone bushes or new wishbone complete.

Hi there and thanks for the replies everyone. I will look into them. would it be better taking the car into a mercedes dealer or just take it to an independant for the brake fault light to be diagnosed ? Also, does anyone know how much i will be looking at paying for an exhaust for the c250 ? It appears to be blowing from the pipe section that connects the middle to the back box. Thanks again everyone.

I've recently had a knocking/clunking problem cured. Over bumps and when I turned quickly from left to right, or especially so when turning from a flat road onto a hill. It turned out to be the n/s bottom ball joint. It only set me back £88 for parts and labour at my indie. Although when I received my invoice, It turns out they've been taken over by a National chain. Anyway the mechanic was friendly and it turns out he drives a W202 too, so that's handy to know.

As for the exhaust, I have the invoice here from 2004 from the previous owner for the complete exhaust and cat. It was replaced in France at the dealers at a cost of 1089EUROS. Personally, with a vehicle of this age I would go to the indie.

Juddering noise at high speed could also be wheel bearing, if it still doesnt go after balancing is done, try to get it look at for a worn wheel bearing on either side.

Incorrect adjustment of wheel bearings is on the Bosch check list for random illumination of the ABS lamp.

Hi all.... Just thought i would let you know that the problem that i had is now fixed !!!! I took the car to a local auto electrician who tested the car with the computer.. He found after about an hours worth of tests that the front right hand side speed sensor was faulty. I tried removing the sensor and cleaning it but this did not cure the problem, so i decided to fit a new sensor. £30 for the diagnostic and £45 for the speed sensor. No more ABS and BAS lights !!... Job done.... Just have to cure the clunking noises now. Ive purchased a new set of anti roll bar bushes to fit.. Will report back if it works...

Just curious

Hi all. Just thought i would ask a quick question. Sorry if its the wrong place to post. I have a C250TD and just wondered, if the engine is looked after and the oil / filters are changed on a regular basis, how many miles do the engines generally cover before they are completely knackered ?? Mine has done 109000 and runs like a new car, although i must say that the kick down can be a bit slow to react at times. Dont know if this is normal for the car as it certainly is a big lump of metal to get moving.. Thanks

Wow !!!

Thanks again for the reply. Now thats what i call durable !! Should last me for a good while then. Have you any idea why the kick down is a bit slow to react at times ?? I have just recently done a full service on the vehicle, which included oil and filters including fuel filter. The only thing that i have not checked or changed is the gear box oil. Could this be the problem ? and how difficult is it to check and change.

Did the anti roll bar bushes sort the clunking? I had a C280 and the front o/s shock absorber used to clunk at low speed after about 10 miles into a journey.

Cluncking noise

Hi Ron

just got the car back from having the roll bar bushes done. I took the car to a local garage that i have used for a long time and they replaced the end bushes. The middle ones were ok apparently. Anyway the cluncking has now gone and the ride is as smooth as silk. I cant believe what a difference 2 pieces of rubber can make. The only problem now is that since i picked the car up from the garage, the car didn't want to start, which i found quite strange. When i put the key in and turned to let the glow plug lights go off, the engine did not turn. On the third attempt the vehicle started. It seems like one thing after another at the moment as the heater blower has packed in too since the roll bar bushes were done. I suppose this could just be a coicidence ? but it does seem strange since it was working fine before the bushes were done. Any ideas anyone ??
