Hi Danny,
Great choice of car! I have a '78 SLC and I run with no problems on unleaded. I would think your car would be ok on unleaded, but I'd wait and hear what other folks say about it too.

I have a 280 CE which uses the same engine as your SL. Unleaded is fine - as stated by the mercedes classic centre in Stuttgart. There are two caveats:

1. You may need to retard the ignition timing slightly (as it's factory set for 98RON 4 star). Or you could use super unleaded. That said, my car is set for super unleaded but seems fine on regular too.

2. Valve clearances need checking twice as frequently as stated in the service schedule.

thanks for you help gents

i cant start any more threads for some reason , so rightly or wrongly thought id write in here again - first of all id like to wish everyone a very merry christmas - and ask a pretty stupid question

ive got a 1983 280 sl - and i really want to fit headlights like the americans have on there old mercs - almost like 4 lamps - i know if i was lucky enough to get some from the states the aim would be all over the place - can you buy any bezzles that would fit over and give me the look im looking for - or have i lost the plot completely - go gentle with me fellas

Finding them in the states is easy, and I wouldn't think the aim would be an issue at all. The US lights shine straight forward with nothing to the side like the European lights. We have difficulty getting Euro lights that are proper for our LHD system because the Euro lights tend to shine forward and up the side; the RHD lights would shine right in other motorist's faces.
