I've always loved the HID look ever since I noticed them about 3 to 4 years ago when they first came out.

p.s. If ever I see the bluey glow of HID's in the rear view mirror on the motorway at night, I always stick to 70 mph... chances are it's a police motorway patrol car.

I once pulled over on the M27 at about 11.30 pm, having slowed from about 110 when I saw blue lights flashing behind me. I pulled in and let the boy-racer Mk1 Golf GTI with fancy headlights carry on past me, bouncing over the joins in the concrete carriageway - and then I got under way again, feeling relieved but rather foolish. Luckily, I had no passengers.

Vauxhall Omega's have some of the nicest HID lights there are.

re: the headlight wash/wipe issue - I've ordered the headlight wash/wipe assembly and hopefully I'll have it this week - costs about £150 for all the motors, pumps and pipework.  Shouldn't need any time in the 'shop because apparently it's a plug and play install which basically anyone can do.

How are they operated ? is it when the windscreen is skooshed the wipers go as well ?

Im very interested in the wipers as it makes the car look a lot meaner even without the hid's.

Fuzzer, if you wash the screen with the lights on, then the wipers operate as well, thats how they work on mine anyway.

Petty point, but on previous cars ive had, when the light wipers have operated, they have wiped and squirted twice then gone a 3rd time to dry the lights then parked.

On the 190 they squirt and wipe twice then stop..leaving the lights covered in foam from the screen wash.....you would think being such well made cars they would give a courtesy wipe to 'Dry its eyes'!!!!

Here endeth the petty point.

How petty Matt

How about this for extreme...if you don't like the idea of it washing the headlights when you wash the screen...fit a new (factory!) button for it!  Get ready to enter the crazy world of MBenzNL aka Steve from NL.

I added another switch to my W202

Here is a pic of the finished button (loads more and instructions on that page I linked):

The button is off a w210 e-class.

But thats not possible on our cars as we all have at least ASR and the switch for that goes there , maybe the switch like that one  could go where either the parktronic or floding mirror switches go next to the remote boot release.

For those that might be interested, I have a quote for the headlight swap kit from my local Bosch distributor - £550 +VAT (about £645 inclusive).  The Mercedes stealership will charge you more than that for ONE HEADLIGHT (I was quoted "at least £2000 mate" to swap the headlights for HID!).  The kit includes xenon specific headlight housings and lenses, bosch control units (ballasts) xenon capsules (bulbs) and a new pair of corner indicators.  The part number for this is 0301 082972, it's been marked as "available to Bosch UK Aftermarket" now, so you can buy it from anywhere that sells Bosch car parts.

Now the only question is should i buy the kit?

Shude.

No, total waste of money, go into your local bulb stockist and get a set of 80/100 watt bulbs, cost about £10.

Please remember, this is only my opinion, not meant to offend.

Shude,

How come the corner indicator units have to change? I've also heard that the trim directly below the headlight unit will need to be skimmed so that it's made thinner, is this right? Also how would the new HID bulbs affect the faulty light tell-tale circuit?

Dave, I wouldn't recommend just sticking in 80/100w uprated bulbs as I've heard this can fry the circuit to the bulbs and possibly affect the bulb housing too as the bulbs run hotter.

Maybe Andy or others have a view.

How easy is it going to be to fit them into the car?

Remember thats 645 plus the cost of the wash wipe which i think you said came to 153 so , call it  £800 in total.

Aha - thats where the heated seat switches are.
I havent got heated seats, but have wires leading to the underneath of the seat squab.  In the absence of a heating element has anyone any idea what they are?
Ejection seats?
Stew.

Hehe, I don't think 80/100 bulbs are better than xenons :) .  If you use 80/100 bulbs in the stock housings you risk melting the reflector and other headlamp components, as well as blowing fuses/bulbs and melting or setting fire to the wiring.  The HID headlight output is totally different to the halos, and it runs at 35watts, not 80/100, so it's less drain on the car's electrical system and produces a LOT less heat than stock halo bulbs.  The bulbs should in most cases out-live the car, as they have no filament.

Steve - no modification is neccessary to the lower strip for 1997+ models, the HID headlight housings fit exactly the same as the halogen ones.  They don't cause the bulb failure light to come on either, as they're the oem units designed for the same headlight system - remember your car could have been fitted with them at the factory as an option and they plug straight in.

As for the extra set of clear corners, no idea, maybe it's for countries that might still be using the amber coloured corner lights.
