i've been thinking about getting my 290,000 mile Sprinter van remapped, i'm not interested in breaking the land speed record etc, but just wanting a bit more oomph, it's a 2010, 310CDI, bottom of the power range van, it loses power very quickly on hills etc, i don't think it does it much good having to drop it down and push it a bit hard to keep the speed up.
I've owned the van from new, and it is regularly serviced by Mercedes, would a remap be that harmful? I approached a local company to remap it, but they wouldn't do it because of the mileage.

Dont bother.
You have 300k on a unit thats worked hard so the engine is tired. I would think a remap is not
going go reverse anything but accelerate the wear.

it has worked hard, but it's still a pretty tight unit, no smoke, doesn't use a drop of oil between services etc,

Though I have also travelled on the back of Johann Strauss's hay cart in Romania.

Only 1 Horse power.

No smoke from the rear either, though I never checked the mileage.

We don’t know it is tired, Sprinters with twice that mileage are not unknown… but establishing the drivetrains state of health is surely the thing to do. You could get someone who really knows these engines to test everything - compression, how well the injectors are fuelling, diagnostics, carbon build up etc etc. It might be well down on its original power but it’s happened so incrementally over the years you haven’t noticed!
