Just wondering it anyone has any stories of high mileage Mercs? My '89 560 SEC has 206K on the clock although I suspect the V8 is barely run in... a frined of mine has an E220 1996 model with 265K on the clock. I think this is a testament to quality engineering!

I've got a 300te 1988 with 63k on the clock, but the local independant reckons it's nearer 263k. As I only paid £850 for it and it's got no service history, other than the last 6 months while I have owned it, it makes me wonder what the point of clocking it was!

PS I think MB service histories are lovely as does everyone else, but on a car this old, it's definitly not essential.

Mine runs beautifully and she shifts if she has to as well (only in a straight line in the dry though!)

My 1990 190e had an offical 167,000 but as the odeometre is bust its nearly at 200,000 I suspect. It goes pretty well and looks good, apart from the horrid abused alloys.

I stupidly sold my last 230Te last winter. She had 219,000 miles on her and
drove like a brand new Mercedes.I reckon she'll happily do another 200k at least.
While visiting scrap yards for some 123 parts,I have regularly seen Mercs with 500k on their clocks. The most miles I've seen is 672k on an old mercedes diesel estate. It belonged to a brewery manager, and he used it for everything, including towing a 4 berth caravan. He reckoned it had been an airport run taxi before he owned it.she was still going strong!

Not so many miles...

Well my 1989 230TE has just 140k miles on it and is really sick right now. I thought the head gasket had gone, took me two days to get the head off, then I found that it was corrosion-damaged. Poor maintenance in the past at some time. Expensive to repair, and the rear shocks are shot too (also expensive).

For now I've bought a Saab to run around in. I can't decide whether to fix the Merc, much as i love it, or break it - the cost of putting it right, even doing the job myself - is as much as I paid for the Saab.

it's unlikely every component in the rear suspension has failed - yes they are expensive if you buy all the parts but it's better to find out which bits have gone

1, if the suspension is really hard and bouncy chances are the spheres have gone - they are supposedly expected to last about 100k miles so they are probably due for change on your car - messy and fiddly job to change them and you need to change them both at the same time - cost about £150 the pair

2, if one of the struts is leaking you only need change the one - unlike shocks they don't need to be changed in pairs - cost = loads from the dealers but you may consider picking up a second hand one - most of the breakers will give you a warranty and they are relatively simple and quick to change.

3, self levelling valve - they have a nasty habit of sticking so that when you park the car it sags at the rear - cost about £150 from the dealers but you can get them secondhand/reconditioned for considerably less and there is a recon kit available for them from the dealers even though they deny it - I used to have the part number but can't find it - awkward to change as the bolts that hold it on often corrode then snap as soon as you get a spanner on them.

If you are changing either the spheres or the valve budget for a new set of hydraulic pipes which link the valve to the spheres - cost about £12 the pair but just cutting the old ones off will save you a lot of time on the job - this information is supplied with the considrable benefit of hindsight after spending about 3 hours trying to shift the unions in order to get the speres out I finally cut the pipes and the spheres were removed in about 30 seconds.

Rear suspension

It's the spheres. I had to do the pipes (front to back) for MOT last year, then I fitted second-hand spheres. They've gone again. I wouldn't waste my time doing that again, and I can't find replacements at less than £135 each - if you know where I can get them cheaper I'd love to know!

I've priced up the engine parts through a trade friend, and a full gasket set, head bolts and bottom end bearings is £200. The head will cost at least £100 to repair, if it can be repaired.

I paid £645 for my Saab with 12months test & 6 months tax. You see how the figures balance?

part number

MA140 320 05 15 N/STK Air reservoir price £57.57+vat each from your local MB Dealer

You should also change

MA124 997 09 40 N/STK Seal Ring price 34p + vat each these are the rubber seals where the spheres pass the through the bodywork

Those are prices from October 2003 (Mercedes Benz Eastbourne) but I can't see that they will have doubled in price since then.

If your local dealer is more expensive try a different one - they do charge different prices.
