Hi All,

1 have a w140 1994 S500 Coupe which I am currently doing up.

I have noticed that when in traffic for just about 30 minutes the temparature shows as above 90 on the gauge.

Is this a danger signal?
What do I do?

If, when driving, the temperature is noticeably lower, then you probably have a problem with the thermostat. Once warmed up, the temperature should not vary by more than a few degrees.

Mercedes make millions selling thermostats as they only seem last a short time. They are not too expensive so I would consider fitting a new one just to be on the safe side and stop it cooking your engine should yours have stuck shut.

My 3.2 v6 runs 98C in traffic and is absolutely normal so your v8 is OK

Not sure if true for the W140 but i know the W124 has a "real" temperature gauge and so naturally even fully working systems will rise a bit and lower dependign on traffic/hills, etc.

On modern cars and other brand's older cars they have a temp gauge which isnt real, but is evaluated by the ECU and only moves if something is wrong. So on most cars the temp gauage never moves if all is working (even though in reality the water is heating up and cooling a little all the time), whereas on older mercs you see the change as it's a "real" reading

The merc's sensor is in the thermostat housing, so you get a reading of the actual coolant temp at the block.

Many thanks for the replies.
Very helpful.
Will keep an eye out for a thermostart just in case....
