Hi people,

Long time no speak, I sold my 98' 250TD estate a while back and now have a bit of an interesting older model on the fold.

I have recently purchased a 1983 280CE. It all appears to be very good, body is in great shape, it all works and mechanically it still feels very tight indeed. The only irritating noise I have is a hissing differential. I remember the noise well from an E30 BMW I had a few years ago. I was told at the time that there is very little one can do about it but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas; forte treatments, different lubricants etc. I know they go on for years like it and dont cause any problems but it does get irritating on a long journey.

Cheers for any help you can give.

Hi stonemonkey,

Ive heard a pair of tights pushed through the oil filler hole works wonders for noisy diffs and gear boxes!! Wouldnt try it me self though....

Its always worth checking the oil level. Id look along where the drive shafts and prop shaft go into the diff to see if there are any leeks on the seals...

I had a whine on my merc once and replaced the oil. Not only was it low, it plopped out into the drain tray in one go, with the consistancy resembling a fresh turd...however, like i say, the oil change and top up sorted it out..
