Hi all, I have a 2002 C180, there seems to be a hollow clonking noise from the nearside front wheel area when you go over drains / road imperfections, I had the same sort of noise when I had a Mitsi FTO and it was the front droplinks, does this car have droplinks? The Chassis number starts C203 any help / idea's would be good.. Thanks. larchlap.

Hollow Clonkings

Hi Larchlap,
I also have had a similar problem with my 54 plate C200 for the last 18 months or so, the car having been at the dealer's for diagnosis and repair several times. The car was in there again today and they have ordered a new n/s/f strut, although they are also going to adjust the wheel bearings.

Don't ask me how they tested the strut, however, as it felt OK with just a knock present at slow speeds when going over drain covers or speed humps.

The car goes in on Friday, so will let you know the outcome.

Regards,

Ernie

I've got a similar problem with my W210 E280.
I've changed the bottom ball joints and anti-roll bar bushes and tightened the wheel bearings, although it is better it still isn't quite right, so next on the list are the stabiliser arms this weekend.

This is your front anti-rollbar Larchlap;http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...623716.634&CT=F&cat=69J&SID=32&SGR=060&SGN=02 ;as you can see you do have droplinks.

Drop links are the most common cause as the guys have said.

When they are baddly worn you can feel the play by firmly lifting the anti roll bar up and down! check this first

P.S. I would do it myself but I am recovering from bowel cancer so I am at the mercy of a local indie..

Clonkings

Just to follow up the earlier post.......Replacing the n/s/f strut seems to have cured my problem, although my local local Service Advisor says that they don't normally have problems with struts on these cars even after high mileages. More commonly the problems are with the droplinks and that mainly on the pre-facelift models, after which the seals were modified. For info, during the last 18 months or so, my strut top bearing has been replaced twice and the lower wishbone once. Glad I didn't have to pay for that lot!

Sorry to hear about your health problems, Larchlap, trust you will soon feel stronger and better able to 'do-it-yourself'.

Regards,

Ernie

Hi Ernieh, just an update on the suspension problems, I have been able to change the drop links and the anti-roll bar bushes myself, problem solved, now nice and quite.. Many thanks for everyone's input. larchlap.
