My 2013 SLK55 AMG V8 suddenly developed a dreadful noise. Only when hot. no smoke, no oil leaks no problems with driving. I obviously don't want to drive until I know what it is. Any suggestions while waiting for the dealer to get back to me. Caught the noise on my ring doorbell which is attached as a zip file.

Sounds like an idler bearing or the supercharger bearing?

I don't the SLK '55 has a supercharger, you need a SL55 for that.

Could be wrong (and often am).

The SLK55 is normally aspirated so no supercharger. The garage say it a diaphragm in the oil separator pump.

The SLK55 (R172) has a relatively rare M152 engine - V8 normally aspirated of 5.5 ltr capacity - only used from 2012-2016

It is derived from the M157 (5.5ltr twin turbo) which is derived from the M278 engine which is 4.7 ltr capacity and twin turbo charged

Yep, I am wrong again

Shame really, the SLK would have been pretty quick with the kompressor engine.

Back on topic, the noise sounds like ancillary belt pulleys bearings/alternator, water pump, power steering etc. etc. Does it sound like it's coming from the front of the engine ?

Get a Mechanic's Stethoscope. They are great for this and not normally expensive. Often available at local parts Specialist, Halfords etc.

So would have the R170 with a 5.5 supercharged SL engine

Take off the serpentine belt and briefly spin up the engine.
If no noise spin each bearing by hand. If one is gritty or anything other than smooth feeling you have your answer.
