Hosepipe

The light/sunroof switch has a HUD seatbelt warning light which recently was sticking on.

Not knowing why and being in a hurry I just rippped the three little bulbs out to stop it flattening the battery (they were hot as they had been lit up for a while).

When I pulled out the switch/light assembly I found it had a spigot which was attached to a "hosepipe" on the left hand side!

The only thing I can think of is some kind of washing M/C type pressure activated switch lives in there?

Any ideas?

Are you a 123 or124
What size is the pipe diameter.

Its the sensor for cabin temp to control the a/c - connected to a little motor behind the n/s air vent that pulls air through the pipe.

Always worth attaching a vac to the sensor grille up then once in a while as a plug of fluff builds up and makes the a/c less responsive.

Don't pull too hard on the pipe or it will come adrift the other end - then you will have a pleasant hour cutting your hand to bits trying to reconnect it!

It makes my day when answers like this are posted :D

It's a 124 but has not got air conditioning!

So I'm still puzzled.

And why should the seatbelt warning lamps come on anyway?

Even witnhout a/c you still have the rotaries with temp on them. This is the sensor that controls heat flow.

The seatbelt sign comes on for the driver until you put the belt into the receiver
- the receiver sensor might be dead/wires broken. Use a meter to check it is switching.

For the passenger, there is a sensor in the seat and then another in the receiver. Again, a meter is your friend.

Enjoy rummaging under the seats!

That's correct - even the standard air temperature control (non air condition)is electronically controlled in that car - between a minimum and a maximum figure - forget what the actual figures are though.

Very sophisticated.

Have you not heard the controllers adjusting themselves behind the dash occasionally as you have been driving along.

Perhaps not, as I see you have an estate and not as quiet as my coupe.

Re the switches in the seatbelt receivers, sometimes some fluff or dirt gets in them - a blast with a can of switch cleaner might be a good first try (not exactly scientific diagnostics but worth 5 mins and £3). Also they can be partly disassembled to get at the switch - replacements are quite expensive...

I still think the best 2 investments for my 124 Coupe were the can of switch cleaner and a new set of fuses. Swiftly followed by the transformation the new ATF and filter made to the gearchange quality.

Very good advice.
That's exactly what I did as soon as I bought my w123.

On some cars you can hear the motor on the end of the pipe to the sunroof switch assembly - they get a little noisy with age

If the pipe comes adrift, or is left disconnected, the heater goes full hot or full cold, I think depending on ambient temp and heater settings. I've normally found it to go full hot. So if you suspect your Duovalve has failed, check this pipe as well

To remove the light assembly insert a 3" wallpaper scraper on the RHS edge of the unit and lever it out. As I recall it has push clips on the RHS and lugs on the left
