I have a 1981 280E 110 engine.

As a bold excersise I had it converted to run LPG on a venturi system. All was good, economy down by approx 25%, power down a little, but it made long distance runs affordable. My problems started when I had a "blow back" one cold morning. The car was fine on LPG but would idle and start on petrol only when the engine was cold. Hot starting was a pain, and worse still, if I was running on petrol and had to stop at a junction, the engine would decelerate to the point where it just cut out. If I caught it in time or decelerated slowly then the engine would idle properly, but rapid deceleration often caught me out, leaving me to try to start with some accelerator dialed in. Or on LPG - which is fine if I have some left!

The vehicle has covered 160K miles and as far as I can tell the fluids etc have been serviced well enough. all is clean with no contamination in the coolant. I have checked hoses and the air filter but despite repairing some cracks in the hoses, there is no improvement. Infact I am now finding that it is a much less certain thing that it will idle for more than 30 sec's or so before the engine gently dies down to a stop. My LPG garage has not been able to fix it and I am a bit puzzled.

Any advice?

By the way it runs fine on LPG.

Thanks

Am I right in thinking this engine is fitted with K-Jetronic injection?

If so then check to see if the air flap (thin metal disc) in the fuel metering head has been damaged/distorted.
A blowback could do this.  They only cost about £10.
I assume that you have thoroughly checked all the hoses etc.

Putting a 4-gas analyser in the tail pipe will tell you whether the engine dies due to lean mixture or rich mixture - that might help in tracking down the problem.  Your LPG convertor should have exhaust gas analysis equipment.

You might want to check your HT system before running on LPG again - blowbacks are usually down to bad plug leads or dizzy cap/rotor arm problems.
