Check fuse, then Duo valve.
My 300ce had the same problem turned out that the resistors in the duovalve were broken.
Picked up a used unit on ebay for £15 inc p&p...Problem cured..

There is one more possible reason: there's a sensor in the map light assembly with a rubber tube that goes down the A pillar to a fan behind the dash. If the sensor's unplugged, or the rubber tube disconnected, or the fan stops working, the heater tends to go full hot

But 99% of the time it's the Duovalve...

Thanks guys it turns out it was a fuse now who can tell me what damage to expect as I drove the car on 6 separate occasions and the temp reading crept may 10, 15 degs away from 120 on 3 instances when I stopped at in traffic.
