Does anyone know any reasons for why it may have gone bad?

Not sealed properly? etc etc

Thanks in advance

but what would the average life of these bearings be?

100,000?
120,000?

I dont think anyone is going to be able to put a mileage to this. This is not a service item, luck will come into it as well as usage, driving style, load etc. I would guess that 120k would be unlucky and that lots of cars go to the breakers yard with the original item still fitted, but as Andy says every bearing on the car has a finite life

Mark.
