Getting round at last to changing the distributor cap and rotor arm on my 300se. It looks as though I have to remove the rad assembly to get to the fixing bolts. Is there a quicker/simpler way?

I've done it on a 124 300

and it is really fiddly. There are three allen headed screw/bolts which hold the cap on. the ones at two and ten 'o'clock are easy, the one at six 'o'clock is a pig. There isn't room to get a 1/4 or 3/8ths drive down there. I soaked the thing with releasing oil ( as best I could) and got a set of allen keys with a rounded knobble on the end, which permits off-centre driving. By being really really patient and toning the fruity language down, I eventually managed to get it in inbetween the fan blades, using the long side into the bolt and the short side to apply torque ( not much sadly). If it is going to come out, then it probably takes as long as dismounting the fan, but it is less hassle. Have a magnetic probe handy as you are going to drop the key load of times. also you will only have a few degrees of torsion available to you, so it will take a while to persuade it out. I'd consider packing it out with washers when you refit, so you don't have to drive it home all the way to fit the new cap. That way, your next removal will be easier.
Have a good study of the new cap, that will give you a good mental picture of what you are up against.
