How do i drain the PAS fluid in my W124?

It's my first Mercedes!

I have just bought a 1995 W124 E300D 24v 606 salon auto. Sun roof – no AC. 120k.
Everything on the car works 

Its really quiet (but I think the back box is n the way out), smooth and if you boot it - fly’s for a derv!

I would love some tips on how to keep this beast ship shape and on the road – what should I keep an on?

I have bought a set of new filters air/oil/PAS/autobox/fuel and corresponding fluids.

Diff oil?

Recommended tyres?

The only thing that is vaguely not 100% is If I’m ‘ham-fisted’ with the accelerator there is a minor clunk from the rear on the changes form 3-4. Coupling? Diff mount?

PPS - So far this car is fantastic – went on a 208mile trip at the weekend – filled up before hand and when I got home topped it up again. 39.8mpg – honestly!. I can hardly believe it.

I've never drained the PAS

just gone for the replace the fluid in the reservoir routine. Sucked it out with a big syringe, filled with fresh, and done the same again a few times over the course of a week or so. That will dilute the old fluid down to an acceptable level and is a lot less aggro than disconnecting hoses and bleeding the system. I also read somewhere on here that getting air into it, or letting the reservoir fall below minimum with engine running is bad for the tandem pump.
Do a search and see what pops up.
Welcome aboard btw.

Ahh,

Ive already done that (no syringe - Helmans jar mouth opereated vac pump), but wondered of there was a nipple somewhere.

Ok - i'll do it again over a week or two.

Thanks.

Any tips on changing the transmission fluid?

wear a hat

It's best done if you can get it up on a lift, barring that, up on ramps and try and have the drain plug downhill if you can. It goes everywhere as I recall, and there's about 7 litres to catch.

...and then i fill it up at the dip stick end? (it's wide at the top - bare wth me, this is my first auto auto!)

Thankfully i have access to a pit and have a 10 ltr catch tank!

I've also got an auto filter too.

fill at the dipstick

I made an adaptor to fit the tube, which meant i could get a funnel in and didn't have to use 1 litre bottles of ATF and their bendy filling tube. There's about another litre if you drain the converter. Best bet is measure the dipstick level before draining, measure what you drain and replace that much at least ( if happy old levels were correct), then check against new level.

You can rotate the tc around

until the drain bolt is downmost ( you can see the whole shebang when you have the oil pan and filter out) I f you don't have drain plug, you can't drain it so don't worry, the dilution principle comes in.
It holds 800 cc or so. Lying on my back, I wouldn't be too bothered, but under a lift, I'd go for it. I think it fills up by magic when you fill the gearbox.
