How do I find POI on Comand if already routed?

Hi all,
I'm sure there must be a way to do this, but I haven't found it. I have a 2003 S class. To use the satnav I push a button called nav and then select destination, postcode or whatever. Once I've done that and the map is on the screen guiding me to my destination, how do I tell it to search for nearby points of interest (I think they're called special destinations) without cancelling the existing route? The only time I seem able to access the special destinations is by cancelling the current route and looking for ones that are nearby. There is a place where it says near destination, but I can't get to this menu if there's a destination loaded as I have to have no route planned to get to the menu - it's accessed by pressing nav with the route on screen, but immediately says are you sure you want to cancel route guidance (or something like that) - press yes and there's no longer a destination to navigate to, press no and you can't access the menu to search for fuel etc. Anyone know how to search for them when there's a destination loaded?
Thanks,
Dave

with Comand 2.5 if you have that, there is a box on the left with map, stop, mix, if you select mix then garages and restaurants are shown on your current map, just turn the knob to the mix and press the knob to high light it, and Mix will turn red

I think once a route has been calculated you just cant 'add' another destination.

When entering the destination you can search for a particular type of POI (i.e. town centre parking) and navigate there, that becomes the destination...

It would have been nice to know what version he has, 2003 was a change of year over to what you have APS

Thanks guys. I can't find a model number on the unit, but I do have the map, stop, mix options page - does that identify which it is? From what you're saying it seems I would then have to look for the type of icon I want and then drive towards it - is that right? That's not as good as getting the details of the POI e.g. for fuel is it a Tesco garage, shell, BP etc but this is a pretty aged satnav so maybe they just weren't that sophisticated in those days. Can I at least tell the system to go to one of the fuel icons without first cancelling the final destination? My Garmin seems to have been a better unit, but that was a modern dedicated unit so I wouldn't be surprised if that's teh case. The Garmin had the added benefit of being able to search for (added) POI's such as Macdonalds or Costa Coffee, but I don't think there's any way of getting that level of choice on the Comand - is there?

Yes as you have the mix function that puts them all on chosen route map, but do tick the box as to want you want shown, otherwise you could get all hospitals shown or airports

Malcolm - by yes, do you mean just display the POI's I want and steer towards one by sight on the map i.e. keep ignoring the route instructions and aim towards the icon?

Yes, just aim for where you want to go on the POI on the map,( tell her in the Comand to shut up) once you have visited your POI select last destination, and off you and she will give you a new route. Your Comand being an 03 should remember the current journey for up to 4 hours I believe.

Just another bit of info, once you have typed in your destination, you have the choice to look on the map for the chosen route, always do this as she can take you miles away on the selected route.

I have a look at the map when she is working out the route, if I do not want to go that way, then I set off in my own direction, and let her work out the route from where I am say after 50 mile and then let her take over.

In my case, the M4 is the fastest route going West, but that is useless for me when going from London as the M3 or 303 is much fast and less miles

Do you not have the 'Via' function on your system?

Thanks Malcolm - I haven't found the facility of looking at the route, so I'll look out for that. It does store previous memories, so I can easily recall those even if it's forgotten where it was headed.

Whitenemesis - no, I suspect that's a later refinement.

Right once you have typed in your destination on the left it will have the map symbol highlighted. while she is working out the route you can click on that and you will see a map with your start and finish flagged, with a blue line showing her chosen route
