How do you find out the Build Date?

I recently bought an SLK that was imported new from Germany in 1998. I have read somewhere that for about £30 you can send details off to Mercedes and they will provide build date - specification etc. Does anyone know where this is or any other way to pinpoint the actual build date? I have tried various VIN number searches
