Its all too hypothetical , we have faults that only affect the BAS, and nothing else,,but that would not help the ESP as that cannot work without BAS, the ABS is separate and not affect by the other two, but again the ABS has to be working. We also get faults the affect only the ESP. BAS came along in 1996 and the ESP was an extra until 1999 where it then became standard.

It would be quite easy if you wanted to remove the ESP and just have the BAS

How's that then, if it is integrated in the ESP control module?

IMHO removing any one of these modules would likely have undesirable knock-on effects

Tell Andy,, not me, If you take out the ESP module and fit the earlier version then you have a car as sold in 1996, and that was what he asked

It was only the fact i was wondering how to disable ESP i would have no desire to permantly disconnect/disable the system. I was asked by a friend of mine if it could be done, and it got me to thinking that was all.

Well if he has a 202 he can do that, it is one of the easiest cars to do it on

In vehicles with engines 111, 112, 113, 605, 606, 611, 612, and ESP
the BAS function is integrated in the ESP control module
In models 163, 168, 203, 209, 215, 220 the BAS function is integrated in the ESP control module.

ASR is also integrated into the ESP control module

You should have looked at the dates I gave,,all of the above are cars with ESP as standard, and all from 1999 onwards

Can anyone explain how the ESP system works?
It does a marvellous job of keeping the back end in a straight line through the snow.
I have driven other cars with traction control, but they just cut the engine power when it senses wheel slip. I get the impression that the MB system is more sophisticated than this? Does it have clutches in the diff to lock or reduce drive?
It doesn’t prevent the back wheels from locking when the auto box changes down when driving on ice. It would be nice if I understood how it works.
Thanks
Matt

An excellent CGI video (just posted on another forum) explains it quite well

Isn't there some 'secret' code only Merc mechanics know that switches off the ESP completely as this was mentioned on Fifth Gear when Tiff wanted to go nuts around the track in an AMG?

When you then restart the engine it resets to normal mode.

You can disable things on STAR with ESP it does make use of the BAS and ABS , and if the ESP is turned off, then the BAS may also get turned off as a safety precaution

After they typed in the code there was no impact on any other component, it just allowed the traction to be completely switched off and thus not interfere at low speed. But recently I also noticed that my ESP still kicks in over 30mph with it off and is just annoying since the wheels are only slightly spinning but not enough to warrant reduction in power. hence i was wondering if anyone knows this code u can just type in and u have total control over the car??
