One of many different plugs on the car, but I don't want to force it and break it. Tried pressing where it looks like you should. Gentle prying with a screwdriver, but what is the correct way?

From the pictures I can see that the shiny corrugated bit has been moved up to unlock the electrical connector.. If I am correct , then the next thing to do should be to pull the connector off. I gather that you are unable to pulll it off.
Right. I was given a tip once.
First, push the connector towards the gadget.
Then, while keeping the tab pressed, pull the connector off.

Thank you. I will give that a go

the silly thing these types of simple quick release connectors are they all designed differently - once you have broken it and got them off, its usually really clear to see how simple it would have been to get off without breaking - if only you knew how...

most of the fun is its sat connected for 15 years and its just all a bit stuck - I usually squirt some lube a bit like wd40 (wrong stuff) - ACF50 ideal - but you won't have any. Let it soak in around the plastic connection for 5 mins - what is really stopping you, is dust, debris and life, making for some stiction that's not meant to be there - the squirt usually gets some grit out the way and lubes the mechaism enough we have a chance - then wiggle in a lively circular manner mostly trying to push together - so not forcing the release mechanism - you should be able to kind of get a 1 mm slop movement in and out - going on - just pushing from rammed seated, to the retaining clip starting to doing its bit

now we have a chance to release without wrecking everything....

I suspect on this one the grip face bit is meant to be pressed in / down, and the arrow bit beneath pushes an out of sight release lever in - that just lets you the pull the connector staight backwards, (left in the pic below) - but the grit, filth, weather seal, and light elelctrical connection is locking everything up - I bet you haven't even disturbed the retaining clip release at all yet

often once lubed, wiggled and moving in out a bit - press the plug in fully home - release the retaining mechanism as best you think - then a sharp tug apart, usually sees it all do what it was meant to

just looked again - there are two bits to release - top and bottom (see your middle picture - here)

Yup ballache. A while back I took back panel off ml250 , 4 towbar and electrics I was best pt of 4hr at it. Making sure I did not break any of multiple designed fasteners. Frankly I think they are designed as single use!!
Does that top bit not require lifting?

Yes top and bottom. Ended up just leaving it on and moving the intake manifold away from the Kompressor.
