Change teh oil and filters regularly, keep up the preventative maintenance, and it should run for a great many years. Obviously its a relatively new engine but given that Mercedes engines seem to be very good, I'd guess 300,000 miles would be easy.

Should be easy indeed, its the same engine as they put in the Sprinter van and just look at the mileage on some of those that are for sale.

100.000 miles and you will start to spend big money ! been there done it ! thats if you get that far ! Older Mercs are more reliable /long lasting !

I would have thought the engines would far outlast the complicated electronics

Electronics can last a long time, it is the moving parts then tends to fail in electronic units - fans and motors. Although heat, vibration and moisture do nothing for their longevity.

My 2.7 CDI sprinter broke a conrod at approx 100160 miles. Dealer said it was a freak occurance and when I examined the engine there was no visible signs of wear in the bores. the factory honing was perfect and there was no ridge to mark the uppermost reach of the piston/rings.

The early sprinters had the 5cyl 2.9 ltr engine and most post 2001 sprinters have the 2150cc 4 cyl CDI. Only greedy boys like me have the 5cyl 2.7 CDI

Hi

I would say it will last long enough for you to get bored with it and then you will want to change.
Every car i have had to date i thought initially that i would keep forever, but then i get bored or circumstances change and then thats it.

I've never heard of any failures due to mileage. One-off catastrophic failures and poor maintenance from time to time, but generally, if looked after properly they should be good for really silly mileages. I hope so anyway!

A long time, with regular servicing. two things might impact - 1.An auto box on the back also helps, as it gives the engine an easier time as you are always in the right gear at the right time. 2. Motor way /town driving - the former gives a longer life, rather than stop/start in town

Looked after these engines will outlast the bodywork for sure, the bores on a modern diesel engine (provided no air leaks and filter in place) will last over 10000hrs or 4-500000 miles, keep the coolant changes as per service schedule and you should avoid cylinder head problems (corrosion) don't over or under rev, don't drive for too long if a misfire develops, over fueling due to defective injectors can cause bent conrods. It's more likely that a catastrophic one off faliure will wreck an engine rather than it wearing out, i.e. broken turbocharger vanes, broken cam drive components etc. Personaly i'd expect to get 200,000 miles from any engine without major parts failing except perhaps the odd oil seal or head gasket, this is why i'm happy to buy with a least 100,000 miles on the clock and benefit from the lower prices, most important of all keep the oil changed regular.

Sprint &go, did you get your 270 repaired under warrenty ? if no what cost to rebuild ?
I will explain more the first things to go on the 270cdi.

1... heater plugs x5, and if you run with even one gone you'll need a relay to !

2.. injectors best change 5, and high pressure fuel pump, i am told the newer one are better ?

3 various/mumerous fault codes, check the price of the above work at a merc dealers, don't take to cowboys !

The older 2.9 engine you could put your hand on you heart and say big mileage small costs, with the 270 that indeed goes well, you can be sure big mileage = big pay outs !

Don't compare the 270 with the older 6 pot lump from the e series, different as chalk and cheese.

And don't listen to the computer chair wizzards who up and up the hundreds and thousands of mile they will supposidly do !

Half of them dont even own one, and are talking pure cr-p !

A user now of several, and talking from experience !

In my case the engine failed a few months before the warranty ran out (phew!) but the engine had already had a few faults covered by warranty

1, waterpump leak
2, Injectors x 5 (changed as a set)
3 failed anciliary belt pulley (probably due to aggressive steam cleaning during injector replacement) which stranded vehicle
4, Power steering pump (not really an engine fault but bolted to it)
5, alternator clutch/bearing failure (again probably due to steam cleaning)
6, Turbo oil return pipe leaking at block (minor seepage and seal probably costs 99p but turbo has to come off to do replacement).

In this case the real faults are limited to the waterpump and the injectors. The pulley and alternator were probably induced by the garage and the PS pump is not really an engine fault. The turbo oil leak was so minor that if it wasn't in warranty I would have lived with it as it wasn't even a drip but just a wet stain.

E Class high milers

Two years ago I was in Rhodes on holiday with my family. We jumped into a brand new E Class Diesel taxi, can't remember which model, but it went like a rocket. The car was absolutely pristine inside and looked and felt like new. Surprise, it had 687,000km on the clock. Yes, that was 687,000km, or 429,375 miles. The driver was really proud of his car and told me he only ever washed it, and put fuel in it. It was serviced at his local garage, (non-merc) and nothing had ever broken on it. What a car?

Mine has a relatively low 170,000 miles on it. 2003 reg. Couple of sensors and alternator needed changing. That's it.
