.....before needing to stop and stretch, or fiddle with your seat position etc? I'm finding these days I can put in a 90/120 minute shift then I start to get a dull ache in the lumbar. I'm not sure if it's getting worse but that's all I've ever really been able to muster. How about you, and how do you combat the aches? I ask because it's on the cards I'll be putting in even more miles in the new year and I suppose I'm worried the backache will start earlier and earlier in the journey the more miles I do. I think I've got my seat set up properly according to what advice I've read - perhaps I'm just getting old :(

And talking of new year may I wish you all the best in health, wealth and happiness in 2009. Happy motoring too.

Cheers.

I routinely drive 3hrs without a break. 4hrs isn't unheard of!

I don't suffer any problems, perhaps a slightly numb bum but that's it. And I have a cronic back condition. The sport seat is very supportive and this is the only car I have sat in and immediately felt comfortable and relaxed :)

Spent a lot of 4.5hr shifts on Bostrom and Isringhausen seats-just a quick stretch-all OK.Agree with pma about Renault trucks though-supremely comfortable.Shame they didn't perform on the road quite as well!!.Never been as comfortable in many cars, though.Generally get fidgety and want a leg stretch after 3.5hrs or so.

As I suspected - it's my lanky bony creaky old body on a hard seat :)

My diesel will do 650 miles between fill ups. Sadly, my bladder does not go quite that far! :(

Glasgow to Cornwall is my longest journey, usually anything from 8 to 12 hours, with 1 half hour fuel/rest stop, time depending on traffic of course.

This year in the CLK was the easiest I've ever done it, but due to back pain, stopping for rests just prolongs the journey & makes it unbearable. Best to grit your teeth & get the miles in before stopping for a quick rest & getting back on with the task in hand. You can always rest your back when you arrive.

Thats a long haul, I got to the services just down the hill @ schapp coming from Helensburgh. Not sore, not tired, but hungry....

I have nothing but praise for the seats in the 211 and their comfort. My only niggle is the headrests seem to push my head to far forward giving nechache, the solution is to sit in a more reclined way, but that puts the steering wheel to far from hands than I care for.

I must admit the most pleasant long journey I've ever done (8 hours), & despite driving a Chrysler Sebring convertible, was from Orlando past Miami and on to Key West. That's one I plan to repeat in the future.

I've never driven in the US but would like too. Your trip sounded good, and probably with the roof down really made it.

Most pleasant car journeys, thats another thread, and maybe worth starting :D

From a comfort point of view the 124 is amazing but the only thing stopping me from taking really long stints is lack of cruise control. I get ankle ache. That said, we are driving to Stockholm in it soon :)

I often do the drive back from St. Tropez to Norwich in one go, leave at 10am and get back for match of the day, stop for fuel and grab a coffee and sandwich as I fill up.
Done that in my 5 series and 3 series, and once in the 1 series, all had the sport seats.
Tried to do it in the Audi with Recaros and had to stop every 3 hours or so to stretch out.

Not sure if I could do it in the E-Class, although it is more comfy on shorter journeys the firmer seats and more pronounced lumbar of the BMW seems to suit longer jouneys more.

You should take the route that I took, the midnight boat from Harwich to the hook,, sleep on board, drive to Kiel 550km overnight boat to Göteborg, then the E4 to Stockholm, much nicer rout than the E3/20,

You save on Hotels and you are not driving when on the boats, so you save on fuel too. The boat from Kiel is like a luxury cruise
