depends now on the offence, can be 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, or life

not sure whats what tho

*most* insurance companies ignore them after 3 yrs tho apart from drink driving, which i beleive is 10, although the rehabilitation of offenders act does state that offences over 6 years old are classed as spent and therefore you do not have to declare them (unless you are applying for a visa to the US) where you must declare all offences no matter how old

A friend of mine is now permanently excluded from the US as he neglected to inform them he was convicted of being drunk and disorderly back in the 80's. They let him into the US the first time on the visa waiver program, but the 2nd time they didnt and he was sent home from florida..... all very embarrassing for him. So take care

If that is the case I can phone NUD and possibly get a re-quote, but then again I did say to them when I got them and they didnt crack a light.

But I'll phone them tomorrow and find out.

I wasn't aware of a change - used to be simple points were valid for 3 years but had to stay on your licence for four years but for certain offences 11 years.

I have only ever had one speeding 3 point offence, just when I bought the Volvo, and it made a big difference.

From memory the points are shown on your license for 4 years, but only count against you (so far as the court is concerned) for 3 years (UNLESS the awarding court has ruled differently). The reason is that if you are stopped say 2 years and 11 months after getting points you could apply for a new clean license at 3 years for a court appearance at 3 years 1 month and the court would be none the wiser. Maybe not such an issue with the advent of computer records but courts (used to at least) rely on what was printed on the license you brought with you to court.

Insurance companies however operate their own rules and they can consider what they want - so if they want to load a premium 'cause someone was stopped 20 years ago they could, provided they don't contravene any other statutes regarding human rights etc.
