Hi , I have a 114 coupe with a new engine and good gaerbox. The car has always sounded a bit thrashy at 80mph plus. I have been wondering after looking at the speedo if the box is meant to change up at around 80. There are marking on the speedo that coincide with gearchanges as statted in manual which do occur but I do not know if the last change is occuring. The box is a 4 speed but I do not know if it starts in 2 or 1st when D is selected. Can any one suggest a way to adjust the change mechanism if I am missing the final change. All other changes and noises are acceptable but I would like it to be a bit smoother at high speed. Maybe I should just slow down!! Any tips welcome PS. The engine is the same as a W123 or 280sl So I guess the box is too.

automatics never use the first gear unless going up a hill towing a caravan or foot down from a standing start so when driveing normal the last change should be around the 50 mph mark then your in 4th

Gears on Gearbox

Hi Teky, Can you tell me why the speedo has the yellow markings at gear shift points if the car doesnt change gear at the last one. Would I be able to feel the final change??

the marks are for the max speed in those gears...

it is easy to check - stick it in L (pull stick nearest you) - thats first, then 2 then 3 then D - does it change each time as you acdcelerate? (so rev up quite high in 1st, then when put into 2 it should change)

EDIT:_ put your badge straight man!

they are economy markers normaly fitted to manual cars to tell when to change gear and they have other uses like to pin point speeds a handy reminder when doing 30mps/50mph and so on which would be used in this way on the automatic
