After less than 4mths of having this new car with cloth seats I am longing to go back to having leather. No matter how often we hoover this car out the black cloth seats never stay looking nice for more than a couple of days.

Anyway I phoned around this morning and the average quote seemed to be about £1,600 plus VAT. I had expected around £1,000 to £1,200 so was quite surprised.

I'm also a bit fed up having a manual gear box and wonder if it might be better to trade the car in yet again

It costs an arm and a leg to get a leather upgrade job that doesn't look like loose fitting seat covers. Also, a bit of a waste of money really (put the £2,000 towards your next merc - or a maybe a model train!). See how much a scrapper wants for a full leather interior from a similar model. May work out cheaper and would certainly look better.

Well I think my partner has enough trains and seeing as it's his train hobby that meant we lost the Mercedes I'm not going to encourage him to buy even more.

I'm now contemplating trading the Golf in for another Golf with leather that is also automatic. I think I rushed into buying the Golf we have as my partner liked having a fast sporty car, but I have to say I still find a manual hard to drive and I can't see us being able to afford another Mercedes for a long time.

hi LB - you traded the blue C200SE Elegance Kompressor Auto for a manual with cloth? I prefer the auto and leather but think lot of others like the manual and cloth. Therefore suggest look for a trade in first. If you can't get one then consider the mod.

Why not get a leather gear change knob.
Its then the best of both worlds.

Yeah I must have been having a ditsy day when I decided to trade the beautiful Mercedes in for any car that wasn't automatic with leather trim.

I've now decided to trade the Golf in for a Golf 2.3V5 with leather trim, it's automatic too and a nice metallic blue colour :)

The problem with trading to get the leather is you will end up putting profit in some dealers pocket and risking getting a dodgy car. A breaker is a very good bet, probably the best option, just find a good one. You might even find a breaker willing to do a swap or worse [better] still BUY A CRASHED ONE WITH WHAT YOU WANT AND JUST SWAP THE PARTS. You can then it sell on for what will probably not much less than what you have paid for it since it will still be complete. However, I compare the Merc with leather to the Peugeot which has a lovely velour and after 11 years and 100k looks like new and in my opinion is more comfortable. Despite having heated contour seats etc I still find them slippy.

There are quite a lot of VR6 4-motion Golfs in breakers yards so you may be able to get a deal on a leather interior.

We filled it up with Shell Optimax tonight, just to see if it runs any differently. We have noticed the idle seems a bit rough, but my partner works for a company that manufacture machines that test and service petrol injectors, so he will whip them out, put them on a rig, check the spray pattern and flow rates, strip them down, utrasonically clean them and rebuild them with new filters, retest them and see if that improves them. Apparently by doing this he should get a matched set, whatever that means

For two reasons, the first being that a Golf is significantly cheaper.

Secondly the Mercedes we had and love is the new C Class Estate and we found that although it is a beautiful car it didn't really fit into our life style which is mainly parking in supermarket carparks, multistory carparks or on roads with very limited parking. My son lives in an area where parking is virtually impossible and we found visiting him a nightmare as we could never park anywhere near him. With the Golf at least we are able to park much easier in the smallest of gaps.

Also there is that sad part of society that don't seem to allow you to have anything nice and we were scared to park the Mercedes in some areas in case we came back to find it had been deliberately vandalised.

At the moment we have a friends ML AMG 500 on our drive with our Golf in front of it as they are away on hoiday and are scared to leave it on their own drive as they had 2 Mercedes stolen off their drive a few months ago. The ML they got back when it was found in a container on it's way to Africa, but the CLK was never recovered and they are still waiting for that to be sorted out. I don't think anyone would go to so much trouble for a Golf as they don't have the same status as a Mercedes.
