Relative has S500 Limosine in immaculate conditioon 1997 with 73,000 on clock - He's kind of guy who drives to golf club and back in it and polishes it once a week etc. It was 73k new, what's it likely to fetch now?

Depends on the colour and spec really. If it's decent then maybe 8k to the right person. If it is not right i.e no leather, then could be less than 5 grand.

It's Cream Leather interior and MB equivelent of BRGreen on exterior, one owner from new with wood trim etc - back seats been sat in about 10 times and hasn't seen the rain. Garages been offering stupid prices for trade in hence question. considering buying it myself but concerned about running costs.

The colour is its problem. Green wasn't popular at the time, nor now really for these. Azurite, Blue-Black or Silver are the strong colours. If you buy it and it has been as well looked after as you say then fuel will be your biggest cost. At least being in the family means you know the history of the car, but it does make it hard to buy it cheap enough to make sense.

i don't think it will be too popular in ireland, If it gets irish plates put on it you have to pay 30% of its irish value on tax, also road fund licence would cost 1343euro a year to tax. Malachite green is a shocking colour too, buy with your heart and not your head because there are loads of Micra's out there

Sounds more like Tourmaline to me. I think it's ok on a w124 E estate, but not really on an S.

The fuel costs (in the time I have had my S500 coupe) are not as bad as I feared considering the sheer weight of the thing.

That said, the giggles when the 'loud pedal' is pressed and that V8 begins to roar is well worth the shift of the fuel economy gauge to the right (ie, low!)

The midrange is incredible - very very very happy S500 owner here!

There's probably someone somewhere who would love the car - the trouble is finding that person!

Trouble is by age it is close to the end of what many consider to be the active life of most cars. By mileage it is still a baby. Trade in value probably around £5k, maybe £6k if lucky.

Second trouble is the engine. Beautiful, refined and powerful though it is, petrol at over £1 a litre has made big petrols notoriously difficult to shift.

Could be worth a try on e-bay with a sensible reserve? Fabulous car to own for anyone who does low miles or can afford a high fuel bill.
