How much is an 08 ML service?

My 08 ML320CDI Sport will need its first service later this month and I'm dreading the cost!

Anyone know what it might cost me (at my local dealer - not interested in non-dealer servicing).

The dash is telling me Service B (although I have no idea what that means!)

So you've got a vitually new ML at how many thousand pounds and you're worried about a couple of hundred quid for servicing?

Blimey Simon with the VED as well as all other costs involved, i'm surprised you are worried at the service costs.

Having said that times are hard for many of us that maybe were not so bad when the vehicle was purchased, if you are in that position i would be more inclined to find a trusted indy, should something like brakes need wear attention the resulting bill may still be less than the dealers imagination.

Your car, as it is an '08, sounds like one that is serviced every 15,500 miles and therefore the first service is a relatively small one (unless you have run well past 15,500 miles)

The Dealer will be able to tell you straight off when you phone them - you shouldn't mention service B, just tell them the reg number and mileage, they should be able to qoute exactly from this.

Let us know what they say!

Thanks guys - just trying to gauge costs!

It's only done 13.5k miles and should be a fairly standard service - will just have to wait and see!

If you want to save money, ring round a few dealers and indies - even if you're not intending to use them, and then tell your dealer manager what you've been quoted. I don't pay my MB dealer full price for a service any more (which reminds me I must call them today as I'm 45 miles off my 'C+' and it's going to take me over 50 to get home - oops) and recently got my dealer £380 quote on my Freelander2 down to £165 with a bit of hardball. It's very competitive and tehy will negotiate - even if they say they won't at first, just say you know about the EU block exemption so would be quite happy to use the indie (who you've heard good things about). They usually buckle. In other words, take a line from their salesmen - lie.

Well chuffed!

Just road tax to worry about then ;)

Thats very impressive given that the B is supposed to be the bigger one and traditionally runs at £400+. The A is around £220.
I just rang up for my C+- £239 - "ah - but you always give me a discount" - ok - £200.

Maybe the schedule for ML is different, but on the car models, if they're coming up to a year old and up to 15,500 miles, then they should only need the most basic service, commonly known as an A service, for £200-£250 ish.

One thing that always bemuses about posts like the original one is that people will buy vehicles without asking about service pricing! What if they'd said £750? :)

This is exactly right! The first service (it is not a "Service B by the way, that is just an indicator on the dash which doesn't refer to the service to be performed) is very small and it is worth asking the Dealer to fax you an exact list of what they are going to do for £220 and, how many hours, at what labour and at what oil price.

Actually, although they might be on the high side (unless in London) it is probably not by much although it sounds like full retail with no discount - and you might think it is not worth pushing it - but it does keep them on their toes! (and it might mean they sharpen the pencil)

Are you sure? I've heard of folk getting quotes like that & then being presented with a bill for over £500 & discovering the £220 is labour for a B service only. It seems very cheap for a B service, my first B service was £460 & I supplied my own oil too, I would have though an ML was more complex to service.

They seem to be ignoring the letter these days as far as I can tell. I expected my C+ to be heavier than a B but apparently, since it was a B last time, its basically an A again - hence £200. I guess the B on the ML, being a 1st service is really an A too.

When I called for mine, I reminded them that when I had the MOT done I had to pay £50 because it couldn't be done free with the service and they were going to give me the £50 back on the next service so I'm now looking at £147 for a main dealer service. I almost feel guilty!

The reason why servicing can be confusing is that the terms Service A and B in themselves can lead you up the garden path - they don't necessarily indicate what type of service is going to be done. I understand on older cars A or B referred to the level of basic checks that were performed (A being minor, B being major) but on newer cars this isn't the case.

There is still the idea of minor and major checks but now even the oil and filter change is billed seperately and both the old and new systems still require all the items such as air and fuel filters, spark plugs, dust filters and brake fluid to be considered. The dashboard indicators ow refer to service letters "a" through to "h" and so "a" and "b" don't have the original meaning.

When my car is serviced, the service sheet they give me doesn't refer to "a" or "b", but instead it shows service numbers alongside a description of what is to be done.
