....well having read so many posts on rusty W210's on here I have just seen what must be the worst example still on the road.

A 'Y' plate E300 Avantgarde in such a poor condition I had to wonder what was going on underneath!

Both front wings rusting all round from the bumper to the door running into the main body of the wing by about 40mm, around both side repeaters. All four doors along the bottom edge and along the top edge bubbling away. The rear wings from front to back looked as if they had a bad dose of the pox and the boot lid had rust around the lock, Star Emblem and along the top edge adjacent to the rear screen.

The owner was telling me he has had the car since new, done just over 80k miles and up until MB told him to bugger off over his rust claim had it serviced by them. Now retired and is getting his £2k from Gordo' in exchange for a Nissan Euro box - can you really blame him:?:

It's a sad day when you park your beloved Mercedes next to some piece of 'inexpensive metal' which is at least 5 or 6 years older than your Mercedes, only to realise that the 'inexpensive metal' is in much better condition than your car and cost a fraction of the price......

Ah the joys of Mercedes Benz ownership

And the cost of 2 struts and a set of boot seals can cost more than many small cars new, add a few SAM's and an SBC and ABC pump and you could buy a new almost anything:( but at least the SL's do not go rusty (yet)

What did they do to SLs to make them rust-free? Are there a number of aluminium panels?

in the case of Malcolm's SL, it never gets wet unless its having a bath! (not that it gets dirty enough that often either!););)

The bodies are nearly all alli, apart from the rear wings. but all rot is worse than rust if it starts.

You will certainly have to wash it more frequently if you do have it covered in Pink vinyl :p

I followed an 04 Vito today which looked to be well looked after, however the area around the rear door wipers was as rusty as I've ever seen any vehicle. A 2" circle around both wiper bases with the rust staining onto the white paint below. The drivers door was also very bad from the rubbing strip down. Neither of these areas are subject to stone chip or knocks so why so rusty?
