Hi,
I thought that I would post this as it might come in handy to anyone with windows that open as part of the door opening mechanism. It is based on a 1999 SL

Problem:
After I purchased my car I noticed that the passenger door seal was scratched. upon further examination, I figured out that if you opened the door to quickly the window dropped slightly too far and as a result hit the sill of the hardtop as it closed. If you opened the door and pulled gently on the window it would move. You could feel that the window was loose compared to the driver door, which was quite firm.

The solution

At the top of the door there is a silver plate with three screws in it. Remove the plate and move the flat piece of rubber shielding the inside of the door.
Behind this you will find a Philips screw in a piece of metal. The screw hole is slotted. Push the rear edge of the window, towards the front of the car and make sure that it is sitting where it needs to be. Then loosen the screw and push the wedge that it is attached to it up to meet the now secure window re-tighten the screw and replace the silver cover.

This should solve the problem. You may need to try this a few times to get the window to the correct position.

Automatic window opening problem on SL 320

Dear Peter,
I am at my wits end with a intermittent (the worst kind) problem on opening both dorrs on my 1997 SL320 fitted with a "glass" hard top.
I understand that the normal operation on opening the door from the inside or outside is that the door handle triggers teh window to lower by 1.5cm to allow the glass not to rip the rubber trim at top. This it does 60% of the time. The other 40% the window lowers half way. Then does not go go up again until teh switch is used.
Obviously this is a pain when you only wish to get something out of the car and its pouring with rain as you need to key the ignition and raise teh window to the exact amount in order for it to close.
Both sides seem to be effected. It happens more when its warm inside and when you are getting into the car than out of the car.

Have you heard of this happening before before????

If so how can I fix it?

Best wishes

I think that you can re-set the windows and roof by turning key to 2 and holding both switches down, if I am wrong I will re post. by holding down the locking button on remote for 5 secs that will close the windows to lower the window press the unlock that is individual for each side. Malcolm

There is a reset procedure as described by television. However, you should also check your battery and its connections.
I had a similar intermittent problem with my windows a couple of years ago. It drove me mad for months and the dealer spent a fortune on new parts under warranty with no success.
I then got a flat battery, and on replacing the battery the problem was cured.
The SL's electrics seem very prone to malfunction if the battery condition is not optimal.
PS this can also affect roof operation, among other things.
Hope this helps.
