I am looking for advice on how to fix my leaking steering box. Is it possible just to replace the seals or do I have to purchase a new box.

I have looked at the recon option but you never know the history or condition of the part.

I am just in the process of repairing a box on my later SL. As steering boxes have not changed a great deal I would think that there are a number of similarities.

An exchange box on a later sl is around £900 whereas mercedes supply a gasket kit for about £25 or a kit containing the main parts that wear out for around £100.

My first suggestion would be to talk to your local dealers parts department first. You may be pleasantly surprised.

PM me your email address and I will email you my paper on steering box refurb. Admittedly it was based on the power steering unit from a 1984 W123 but it will be similar if not exact. If it is leaking from the top then it will be simple but it is probably leaking from the bottom which will require the remove of the pitman arm but even this can be done with the unit still in the car
