Just wondering if anyone has a trick for getting the chassis number of a car from the Registration plate without paying for a full HPI check?

There's lots of useful stuff online now like the (inaccurate) RAC check:
http://www.rac.co.uk/web/carbuying/vehicle_data_search/

The DVLA version of the above, which gives different results:
http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/

The Russian VIN decoder:
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

The free Vauxhall Glass's Guide trade-in value check
http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/vx/finance/valueyourcar.do

But I want to check a car just from the number plate, if possible

As far as I know Nick,DVLA are the only people to hold that info,Even HPI cant always give all of the info like VIN. I understand that with reasonable reason they will give this info to trader's.

Why do you need it? The vin is under the windscreen as well as on the slam panel and I believe stamped into the floor. Cross checked against the log book, it that ties up its probably genuine. A cross check against the VIN decoder will tell you if it matches the car. Clearly if its a clever clone, you aren't going to be able to tell but the log book is normally all a dealer or licencing office check against.

The car's about 200 miles away and the seller's not answering the phone. From the photos it looks like a high-spec Sportline car so I was intrigued and the photos show the reg plate

Here's another useful source - online MOT verification:
