Chaps..

I have been toying with a nice little web site I could build.. but I would need a way to be able to retrieve the VIN for a registration online.

Does anybody know of a way of retrieving?

Preferably free.

Also, does MB WIS/EPC/SDS etc software suite have a way of retrieving.. i.e. How do the techs do it?

Thanks

checkmyreg.com used to do it for free but now have an enterprise plan - £30 a month for 500 look-ups then 6p each after that.

Back in the old days many car buying sites like WBAC used to have very sloppy code and you could just put a reg in and it would look the vehicle up and it would show you the basics but if you viewed the source code you would find all the other useful data there like number of owners, vin etc. Since GDPR everyone has tightened up....

Ah thanks.

Ha I do something similar with AutoTrader.. you can inspect the network calls to get the VRM field if the seller has obscured the reg. Getting the VIN is a pain. A shame because I wouldnt even consider a VIN to be PII.

Problem is, there are a couple of sites but as they are publicised and all start to use they twig on to the fact something is up and change the site not to display vin...good example BMW warranty site used to display vin for any car if you typed in reg no but since everybody started to use it they realised their lookups shot up and started to hide it!

Ah yea haha, I saw a thread on PistonHeads.

I wonder could I pay for an API endpoint and make a little site that converts the VRM to VIN (And maybe a few other bits) and make a margin on the API call by charging 20p or something small.

Probably not that much of a demand to get any return.

There are paid for sites that will give the Vin# from the VRM but I don't know of any that are free.
Care to PM me the links to any?

No it doesn't, not even DSB which is a PITA!

We use our booking system to lookup VIN's and other vehicle info from Reg's but like everyone, we pay 6 or 10p per lookup (cant remember which)

Ok.. so this is why you can't easily get it online... DVLA have strict rules about non owners of the car getting their hands on it.
