If it's the standard merc one you have at present, with the chrome lever coming out of the knob and going down into the gate, it should pull off the lever/stick. It sort of sits in a little groove and holds on tight, so be careful you don't brain yourself when it finally slips off. The chrome stick doesn't, or shouldn't come out of the auto gate. The manual knob is similar, except it has a gaiter to pull up befor you get there. I'd check with MB just to be on the safe side before you have a go. I only speak from experience on my SL, whose knob fell off when I shifted from P to D the other day. It was an aftermarket fitment, and I could see the retaining groove quite clearly when it fell off.
