Can anyone advise how to remove / refit the colour-coded door mirror surround (drivers door - folding type) from a 1998 E Class following an "incident" with the garage door please - I would like to replace it with a new one if possible (or at least take it to be repaired without losing the use of the car)?

Is this possible as a d-i-y job without any specialist tools?

Many thanks in anticipation

I had similar problem with c class mirror and stripping went something like this:
Carefully remove mirror by pushing it in at the bottom and lifting the little spring steel rod off its locating step at the top of the mirror. Gently pull mirror off its other locating tabs. Remove heating wiring from mirror. Look for and remove the three little torx screws which hold the mirror adjusting motor onto the metal frame inside the mirror surround. Remove the motor at wiring plug. Look inside the mirror surround and identify a stainless steel looking spring clip at the right of the black frame and nearest the front of the car. Pull the mirror back against spring tension, insert screwdriver under the stainless spring clip and at the same pull the colour coded 'bowl' off the assembly whilst easing the framework back against the car. Apart from needing the small torx driver and assuming E is similar to C you should be able to complete the job with a bit of patience and careful manipulating. I know MB sell a pre coloured mirror housing for the C, don't know about the E. To fit the mirror again, the little spring clip at the top is located on top of a step at the top of the mirror, the mirror located at the bottom and pushed in, the the top spring dislodged off the little step with small screwdriver and it falls in behind its final little locating spur. I hope this may assist and that you can understand at least some of it.
