I have a 1981 230E parked at an airport in France.
Due to lack of TLC have recent problem with the starter solenoid sticking
Definite diagnosis because traditional tap with a hammer sometimes works. My question is how the ** does one get access to remove the offending starter/solenoid? The inlet manifold is in the way from above and the engine mounts from underneath? Do I need to take the carb off?
Or is it just 2 bolts behind accessible with a socket and the wiring in front?
Is it feasible to do this in a car park or do I need to look for a French garage? Can anyone help advise please. Thanks

I seem to remember being faced with this problem in the past and I think that I probably did end up removing the manifold. It doesn't take a great deal of time to remove and refit. The time consuming bit being the nut just by the cold start valve on which you can only get small turns at a time. You probably can get away with just sliding the manifold away from the block and not have to disconnect the fuel lines. I don't suppose the airport authorities will appreciate spilt fuel.

If you haven't done so ask someone to turn the key whilst hitting the solenoid with a hammer. Also try a wire direct from the battery to the small electrical input on the back of the solenoid (if you can see it). Sometimes the problem is not with the solenoid but that resistance has built up in either the ingition switch or wiring so much so that there is no power left to operate the solenoid. This can also be achieved by angling a screw driver across the large top nut (fixing down the main power lead) and the small electrical input. But not a wise idea if visibility is impaired.

No chance of a bump start
