You are being had - cheated. there will be nothing wrong with the engine only the breathing pipes as mentioned above.

The MAF will not put the engine lamp on, but the oil from the breather above will as the oil gets onto the O2 sensor, and it is this sensor that has moved from its stored settings and this puts the light on.

A new MAF if needed cost £145 from Bosch and takes all of 5 mins to put on.

OK the laser has gone down on the Sat Nav and firms on Ebay fix them for £225

The Air con may just want a charge,, go to quick fit and they will charge it up,,£40 if it works and free if it does not work

The wiring harness and new plug is quick to fit and this could be your only engine problems.

Where do you live in the UK

Thanks for replies everyone.

Thanks Television for info, just to clarify though, I have had MAF replaced & magnet and wiring harness already. The trunking to and the MAF have oil in them today, the guy that came out said it was a known problem with some of these engines breathing too hard causing the oil to be blown out of the breather on the cam cover and thru the inlet tract, intercooler and into the MAF, he said the short cure was to clean it all out but it would return or to replace the engine  which seems a little drastic to me, also a google search has not revealed any engine faults like this which makes me very suspicious.
The Indie I have used is based in Weybridge, Surrey as I live and work in that area.
I have a friend who is going to regas my ac later this week and have found a company in East London who can replace the Laser in the command for £170 with a 6 month guarantee, just got to find someone to take the command out for me.
To me it just very annoying (And bl***y expensive) that this has all happened in a short period of time, its not that I have skimped on serving or anything either or drive the car hard.

Thanks again Television, do you have Ollie's contact details.
Not sure what you mean in line 2, and yes if you have details of removing Command that would be great :)
Many thanks

Hi Malcolm
Thanks again for the emails, only problem is that they relate to the 203 range from 24/4/04 which has the later type dash.
I have WIS at work and cannot find the earlier dash either.

Hi hope someone can advise me.
I have a 2001 C230k Coupe with the 111981 engine with 64000 miles, 2 months ago the engine warning light came on and local indie said it was the MAF unit which they replaced, then 3 weeks ago light came on again they sent someone out with a star machine and he said it was oil in the wiring harness, i booked car in and they replace the front magnet and fitted new modified MB short harness, 5 days after getting car back from them light came on again, they sent same guy out again and it now has oil in MAF unit and trunking and he says its a common problem and engine is breathing too hard so needs new engine  or just clean out MAF for short term fix.
So to my question, do the above posts for the W208 also relate to a W203 or is he right.

1. Maf failure - cost to fix at indie £470
2. Short engine wiring harness and magnet - cost to fix £270
3. EGR Valve replaced - cost to fix £120

Ok, I am sorry but I need more help regarding engine warning light on.
I was going to take car into Ollies in Southampton to have breather pipes etc replaced, when my Indie said they would do the work as a gesture of goodwill (ie only charge 2 hours labour instead of 4 and parts at cost) they did the work last week and showed me the old parts, so no reason to doubt them!
But within 30 miles/1 day the light is back on, they are still insisting that the only cure is either to revent the engine breather in to some sort of catch can or replace engine, even going so far as to say that it is a known fault that these engine's breath too heavy, but Mercedes will not admit to it.
What now, they want the car back for a week which is fine by me, but any suggestions as to what it could be?
I have already thrown loads of money at the car, with the above and other work, and now jsut want to sell it, but can't all the while the light remains on.
Any help/advice is very much appreciated.

i believe you have oil in the wiring loom although you replaced the magnet and added the new mod there is still oil in your engine loom i suspect. it gets all the way to the 02 sensors easy way to tell unclip the 02 sensors 2 on the exhaust system and there will prob be oil in the female end of the clip or it will show up on diagnostics tests 02 sensor upstream or downstream in my experiance it has done no harm only sets the light off hope this helps
