Drops of hydraulic oil appeared under the right rear suspension of my 1981 300TD. I haven't changed the hydraulic fluid on the car for two years and am wondering if there's any hope for a cheap fix. Is there a substitute for the Mercedes hydraulic oil and if a strut needs replacing, do they have to be replaced in pairs?

Are you on the original suspension components? If so you are running on borrowed time. The struts or lines are usually the first to go. Pinpoint the leak and use the M-B fluid - false economy to use a substitute that may wind up attacking the rubber components. Replace components in pairs. This is not a difficult DIY job, but you will need the M-B manual for correct levelling procedure to set up the valve. Take comfort in the fact that the pump hardly ever fails unless grossly neglected.
