Okay they need work!

I have'nt quite decided my plan of attack beyond spray-on oven cleaner to shift the brake dust particles and general grime. There are two scratches on one wheel which can proberly be rubbed out with the appropriate sanding/polishing bits. I'll prolly tackle the sections where the paints flaked with sanding and painting. I figure for 70quid/100 euro I can't go too far wrong! :)

Mike.

I think the paint code is MB 9700. Use a high build primer as well, and you should get rid of any imperfections. Tons of lacquer, about five times as much as you use paint, and they will look like the d's b's when you've flatted them down and rubbed them up.

Careful with the oven cleaner, many formulations contain sodium hydroxide which dissolves aluminium and its alloys if left in contact for too long.

Phosphoric acid based cleaners are alot safer if the bare alloy is visible through the paint.

I think I would be tempted to get them bead blasted back to a nice smooth and clean surface and follow Myros's advice.

Professional refurbishment only costs about £20 a wheel, including sand blasting. Deduct the cost of oven cleaner, paint, lacquer from this, plus the frustration of the trial and error attempts, it hardly seems worth the effort

Hi
I had my wheels refurbished on my SLK. They are now better than new, but cost £59 quid each

I used T cut on mine, followed by a good wax polish - hard work but cleaned them up a treat, at least better than oven cleaner. Clearly a full profession refurb is far better though.

I found a place not 4 miles from me while searching yellow (or Golden as we say here!) pages online. So I'll give them a call and check thier prices.
