which I think is meant to be intact and fit underneath the fuel distributor/inlet manifold. I think its probably to damp the throttle butterfly somehow.

Can I please have a part number and some idea of where its supposed to fit.

230 TE 1992 - the diagram to the left posted by roofless is appropriate for my car, but the part is not shown on that diagram. Its a spring about two inches long, tightly compressed, hook at bone end, long tail on the other end with a hook. Locates onto an A shaped bracket under the fuel diistributor.

The ever helpful parts man at Mercedes Boston identified it on sight as part number 102 993 23 10.

As we thought it pulls back on the throttle butterfly, thereby closing the air off when on no load from the throttle cable.

Will fit tomorrow, along with a temperature controlled vacuum valve. That's the last sensor I can economically replace.

Its now going like a bird - changing the tranny fluid was the most worthwhile thing I have done to it.

i would 2nd that on an older merc new fluid+filter thou subframe bushes make a big difference as well
