Hi folks, hope you're all doing well, I have a problem with command shutting down on my 2008 C class.
It starts up ok but after a random time of around 2 minutes to 10 minutes a pop up message says 'command is now shutting down' then the screen closes.
After this happens My fuel gauge starts to randomly read normal, low or show empty, changing occasionally, and my headlights come on even with the selector set to off.

Unfortunately it still shuts down and does the other weird stuff.
Anyone got any ides what the issue could be?
Thanks.

If it was just the COMAND unit, I'd suspect a failed fan and overheating, but the fact you have the other issues at the same time indicates either a control module or damaged wiring loom I'd think. Hopefully someone with better knowledge of the C Class can advise.

modern cars have a network controller that operates the canbus - a dim witted basic network of low voltage rubbish. It was meant to simplify a cars wiring and have the option of adding optional extra toys that can be coded on as there and or with certain features in software

as its all low volt joke signalling, it doesn't take much to throw them in a tail spin - Mercedes took the opportunity to design in some extra work and profits from selling spares - by careful design of the car to maximise the opportunities for the network controller called a SAM (signal acquisition module) and or any of the canbus junction boxes, to be a soggy mess of confusion.

they do this by making sunroof drains, windscreen drains and the boot lid all completely inadequate - after a few years of pollen, road filth, the odd leaf etc, the drains fill with detritus and the water now lands inside the network controller or sits under the carpets where the junction boxes slowly corrode and the car gets a muddle on

the boot lid in the 221 and the 211 both allow copious quantities of rain water to run off and go inside the car upon opening - just where they mounted the electrics (Rear SAM, Radio, Amps, Nav units, etc) - I have NEVER owned or seen on any other car in 50 years achieve this spectacular madness

the front SAM - usually under the bonnet - from the top might be a 7" x 9" black box which with the lid removed looks to be a fuse box - in reality its likely an 8" deep swimming pool with half the worlds wiring kitted in a mess and various circuit boards shorting out and now wondering what the hell is going on

if at all damp get the water out as best you an - clear away debris and try to get the drains to flow - then contact cleaner and a tooth brush to get the blue green fur off the circuit boards - followed by wd40 and or better ACF 50 and see if it gets over itself - if unlucky it will have blow its brains out and ebay may be your friend

to make life fun, there can be about 6 million all slightly different SAMs for each model they created, and or may or may not need software tweaked to work with your car's toy count - somewhere on the unit is a sticker saying exactly what it is - and you need to research if there were newer later ones that did the same job - as most of the identical part numbers will be other dying units others ripped out of scrapped cars

the alternate choice is to pay merc 1500 quid to do the job - for something you may be able to do for less than 20 quid at home - or 50 quid with ebay support - make sure you don't short out electrics, snap connector blocks or mess it up when playing

Water in the SAM would be on my list of things to check

Front or rear SAM?
Because I notice that the electrical component inside the car malfunction.
Most times you can't open the trunk from the inside,
You can't bring down the windshield unless you off and restart the car.

on another site - mercedes medic - are some great pictures and fuse box diagrams... by looking at your faults and which fuses are in which SAM, you get an idea where the fun might be - the usual swimming pool is the front one
