My first Mercedes!

I have just bought a 1995 W124 E300D 24v 606 sallon auto. Sun roof – no AC. 120k.
Everything on the car works 

Its really quiet (but I think the back box is on the way out), smooth and if you boot it - fly’s for a derv!

I would love some tips on how to keep this beast ship shape and on the road – what should I keep an on?

I have bought a set of new filters air/oil/PAS/autobox/fuel and corresponding fluids.

Diff oil?

Recommended tyres?

The only thing that is vaguely not 100% is If I’m ‘ham-fisted’ with the accelerator there is a minor clunk from the rear on the changes from 3-4. Coupling? Diff mount?

PS - How do I drain the PAS?

PPS - So far this car is fantastic – went on a 208mile trip at the weekend – filled up before hand and when I got home topped it up again. 39.8mpg – honestly!. I can hardly believe it.

Sounds really good.

Diff mounts do go mushy and are a real pain to change - but I do have the special tool now and can fix yours if you are anywhere near Berkshire or are prepared to drive to me.

Same goes for subframe mounts which is a lot of work without the tools = again I have these.

I am very enthusiastic about all chassis matters. That includes:

* Suspension - have the special spring compressors required for Mercs and knowledgeable on the complex rear suspension.

* Driveline - includes propshaft, diff, and subframe

* Steering - includes testing within spec and adjusting to bring steering wheel back in alignment if out (without removing wheel from splines)

* Geometry - checking within spec and adjusting to bring back to spec. If car has a pronounced pull to nearside then can normally bring that back to spec also.
