In 1992 my Dad bought my Mum an '84 380SL with 70,000 miles on it. In 2003 they parked it in the garage with 110,000 miles on it, half a tank of gas in it, and went into a nursing home.

I rescued it this month. First I registered and insured it. We had it towed to a local mech who put a battery and fuel pump and line in it (from pump to tank). It ran! I took it to a tire store and put four new tires on it, then to a garage and had a new middle muffler installed, followed by new coolant and fresh crankcase oil; tranny looked good, nice and red.

The next step was to drive it from New York to its new home in Key West FL, 1650 miles. I made it! It took me two tank-fulls to realize that the tank-vent was clogged or gummed. It was developing a vaccuum in there which the pump could not overcome, once half a tank was consumed - it balked. The fix is to keep pouring injector-cleaner and gas treatment in it, and not letting it get below 1/2 full. :)

It leaks, or seeps, coolant, about half a liter in the last three weeks; my local man looked at it and found a couple pinholes in the radiator, too. The emission system needs complete replacement I think. A proper front end alignment was not possible due to wear in the tie rods or bushings or whatever MB has up there. The a/c is out. I'd like to replace the plugs and wires. I can't get the cover for the air cleaner off, a couple of pipes or hoses block two clamps from coming loose.

I spent three days washing and waxing it, vacuuming the interior and reconditioning the leather, emptying the boot and cleaning the toolkit, filling the spare.

It looks brand new from ten feet away! Topless in Key West, it draws looks.

These little problems are nagging me though. Do they sound familiar? I know nothing about MB's; the nearest dealer is in Miami over 100 miles away. My intention is to get it in shape and turn it over to my wife.

Well done to have got as far as you have. Its really great seeing some of these cars back on the road and it is a testament to the quality of their build. Post the problems you encounter here one at a time and there are some really knowledgable people on here who are always more than happy to help.

PS It would be really nice to see some pics.

Still Rolling

I'm sorry I have no pics -- we tried but they looked pretty lousy. It is "Classic White" with "Parchment" interior, brown soft-top. Really sharp.

We have taken it out a couple times without incident. Coolant seeps about a tea cup a week; I keep a cat box underneath and then recycle. Today I called MB of Cutler Ridge in Miami, owned by Bill Ussery. I arranged to bring it in after the first of the year for a safety inspection. The service manager emailed me and said he has expeience with the older models.

What I want is a mile-long printout of all the systems that need service, and a parts list. Then over the next three years or so I will tackle them. When I retire in 2010 I will have a car that will take me another 50,000 miles with confidence and style!

Since I got it for "free" I consider the repair costs to be my purchase price. The car's value is around $10,000 so that is my budget. I have about $3,000 in it so far, for the tires and muffler and fuel pumps, registering and insuring it, the airfare to go north and get it, and the three days on the road ferrying it down to Paradise. I burned 100 gallons and spent two nights in motels. A tenner is cheap for a new car. And what a car! You wanna make your wife happy? Get her a classic Mercedes!

Well, I have registered on a couple of other boards as well (same name). This list is in UK which I did not realize at first. Most likely I will have anything more to say over on the American boards. I appreciate the warm welcome I found here. Benz-heads unite!

There are a number of mechanical devices which increase sexual arousal, particularly in women.
Chief among these is the Mercedes-Benz 380SL convertible.

Photos

We had a photo shoot the other day. Just for fun, even though I most often frequent the USA board, here you may take a look.

The car is in the shop now for a new radiator & hoses, water pump, timing chain guides and tensioner (it rattles!), plugs and plug wires. Soon it will time to cruise once again!

Dave

Very nice, I'll look out for it next time I'm in Key West.
I was supposed to go this year, but the airline went bust.

By next week it will be wearing the tag "KEY CAT" so you'll know it when you see it! The beautiful woman next to me will be my wife. Thanks for the appreciative comments, the members of this board obviously have excellent taste.

Phase Two Complete

Here's an update. In August I had the following work done:

BRAKES
Pads front & rear
Discs front & rear
Hoses front & rear
Wear Sensors

SUSPENSION
Shocks front & rear
Coil springs front & rear
New Upper Control Arms
Lower Control Arms ball joint & bush kit
Sway Bar (Stab Bar) bush kit
Subframe bush kit (front)

STEERING
Damper
New Tie Rods
New Drag Link

MISC
Bearing, Race and Seal left rear
Motor mounts
Trans mount
Shims
Hood Pad & Seal
Gas Cap
Front end alignment
Headlight alignment

She rides real nice and brakes straight. The whole car is an inch higher, see the before and after pics.

After the first of the year I'll go for Phase Three, a new exhaust and R&R the drive system -- flex disks, hangar bearing, diff mount and rear trailing arm bushes. Maybe the exhaust guy can weld some reinforcing gussets to the subframe brackets for the lower control arm.

Longer term it needs work on the throttle linkage, trans linkage and steering play. In each of those more rubber and plastic has worn out. Eventually I'll want a paint job and new padding for the seats. It's a beautiful car and beginning to look like an antique!
