I think Ive got a problem

Auto gearbox problem

When cold my 2L 190e auto drops down into first gear at low speed and somtimes when pulling away . It has only just started doing this . does this sound unusual ? Could it just need a fluid change ?the gearbox feels as if it can,t decide which gear to be in .

Might be a bit low. Check the fluid level.

Check the level first. You don't want to overfill, you may cause more problems.

Do you think it will be ok to use dexron 111 as I don't know what fluid is already in there .Someone told me you shouldn't mix different makes of oil/fluids .

Dexron-111 should be ok for your box, originally filled with Dexron-11, but as you say you don't know what's in there now. I wait to be shot down by purists but i would say that any good quality ATF to Dexron-111 should be suitable and not a problem to mix brands.
Recommended to change ATF and filter on this box every 30,000mls or 15,000mls under severe driving conditions. Cheers Geo.
