This.....having had a keek at some of the member's car's (and lovely they look too...) but why in this country with such bad roads eg hole's ect ect are so many people lowering and fitting l/p tyre's hence even less air to cushion you...I cant quite get my brain round this.

I'm not saying all roads in brittain are hellish, but there are a hell of a lot that are!

A very good question - I would'nt dream of fitting L/P wheels and tyres with the roads in the state that they are.

With all the taxes we pay to the goverment to drive our cars we should have Snooker Table smooth roads (with out the pockets).

When I bought my Volvo,V70(racing version 1750kg) with 205x40x17 tyres home to dorset I lost one wheel £400+ tyre£175 on the way home,(mian road into Lyme Regis) and a week later lost another one on the same road, different hole.

I now use 215x45x17 and no more problems, and a comfortable ride, though my ex moans non stop about the ride when ever she comes over,My 99 SL uses 245x45x17 in 2000 they went over to 18's I would like them, but as you say-the holes ?

I think I have made comments about using low profile tyres and bad roads before, so this will be a vote for me then. I used to do a lot of cycling and used bigger tyres than most other people because of the roads. Tyres that worked well in the Tour de France never worked here because of the surface. The deep fried diet didn't help either.

Germany spends a lot more on roads than we do. We have a tricky situation with our climate, we have a fast freeze/fast thaw. This makes the roads fall apart. Add in the fact that we have no daylight in the winter and we all hit the holes that appear.

A couple of solutions would be to switch to european time so we at least have one daily jouney in daylight. We could try and slow down the gulf stream so that the roads remain frozen for a longer period of time.

There's no reason (as stated above) we cant either!!... .....

"They" know what our summer's/winter's are like and have known for ****** years, but "they WILL NOT do anything about it!!.

I mean a bit of savvy tell's you....think of this way too.......

If you have heavy "traffic" wear on the carpet's on your house, you put down a heavy carpet..right!. So why the hell dont "they" use the same common savvy on the ****** road's!!...put a good heavy surface down....not like "they dont have the cash is it!!!....quite simple really!

When I was in NJ (New Jersey) a few years ago their roads were (in the winter....and alot colder than here) still fine, even in their built up area's......so just what the hell is our problem here.......aha!..........

The "suit's....who seem to think "they" know everything....but in reality know sh1t....

I think the Gulf steam is slowing down,it is getting weaker here in Lyme Bay, also in Oban.

Forget L/P

The roads in London are full of pot holes, speed bumps and bits of BMWs.

As far as I can see us British should be driving these things...

Err...my C43 came with 45's on the front and 40's on the back. Fantastic at speed on smooth, fast motorways A roads and B roads, challenging on badly surfaced B roads and like concrete on London potholes. My last car had 35's so in comparison it's luxury. I've been asked why I don't put 18 inch wheels on mine and I answer that I wouldn't want to back to 30's or 35's

The trouble is that new cars look great on 18's 19's etc and also work well on smooth continental tarmac.......so it's a sacrafice for high speed lane changing and style. As you say it's a BIG trade off.....

I've gone from 55's to 45's and "comfort" to "sports" suspension. I wouldn't go any further. Looks fantastic but I'm finding road defects I never knew existed. The 245's are great round corners too but I can't sit in the inside lane anymore. It's like driving down a rutted farm track.
Certainly wouldn't go to 18'' wheels, 17'' are already a bit too much.
Have I mentioned how good they look?

35's on the rear and 40's on the front on 18" wheels. Bit hard over bumpy roads sometimes but roads up here are pretty okay.I prefer the better handling over comfort anyway you wussy's !!

35's on rear and 40's on front, 18 inchers....dont notice the bumps as the crappy conti's spend too much time going sideways due lack of grip!

or is it too much throttle?

went out in a range rover sport with 17inch things on and it was noticeabley better at smoothering out the ride than the same with 28 inche ones. and that has air suspension. dump dealer attitude means the SLK stays for a while yet!!

my boss is just in the proccess of ordering the new s600 with the amg kit and the 20 inch low profile wheels so that will be a ride to be recond with!
we have had both front wheels on the s55 replaced due to being buckled and i put this down to the state of the roads (& no i aint twatted no kerbs neither has the boss to my knowledge:p )
my boss says this is normal for the sports cars and he has had to change front ally's on his porsche due to twatting potholes at 100 mph:-(

My E320cdi came with the AMG 18" wheels, I changed them for the standard Avantgarde 16" wheels. I spend most of my driving time back and forth thru mid Wales on poorly maintain roads. Mine is a lot more comfortable than a friends E280 on 18"s
Peter Wheeler (ex TVR) used to say he would spend hundreds of thousands getting his cars to run perfectly only to have them ruined by owners putting large rims on them because they liked the look.
I went for comfort as I can’t see the wheels when I’m driving it anyway.
