coil possibly blown effectively 'cutting out' 2 cylinders.

The engine wiring harness insulation degading and allowing the coil feeds to short can be the cause.

OR

it could just be the temp sensor faulty and engine stalls when warm

OR

it could be the lambda probe in exhaust - considered a service item as mileage approaches 100k.

OR

it could be the charcoal canister in wing blocked - needs changing at 72k ish miles

The crankshaft possition sensor is a known fault. Coil packs when faulty, stay faulty where as the sensor can be intermitant.

Hi Mr Rosher, I take it the cars been serviced according to spec and that it wouldn't be something basic like a blocked fuel filter?.

re idle problems

hi georgerow yes the car has been serviced by local dealer, it all started after i replaced the head gasket and the wiring loom that sits on top of the engine, was told timing was out so had dealer reset it,changed air mass meter, changed v.o,p.relay, and still no good,

Hi again, When you put the new harness on did you maybe disturb/damage the various vacuum hoses. How about an air leak on the inlet manifold/throttle body?. Also as kth mentions the charcoal canister. Associated with this is a purge valve which if stuck open would allow fuel vapour through at idle, which it aint' ment to do, enriching the mixture upsetting the idle. Also...could be a faulty thermo valve which controls the purge valve!. Some more things for you to ponder!.
